The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme is Here!

08 September 2015

We are delighted to announce the launch of The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme. From September 2015 students at BISS Puxi will benefit from a unique performing arts curriculum jointly developed by Nord Anglia Education and The Juilliard School, which has been designed to inspire students with artistic ambitions and enrich the creative skills of all students beyond the arts.

Our Head of Music, Ms Rakowski was lucky enough to spend a week over the summer at The Juilliard School and was involved in professional workshops with Juilliard teachers. Ms Rakowski shares some of the highlights of her time at Juilliard and what it means for our students.

1.       Can you tell us more about your role at the school and what role you will play in the collaboration with Juilliard?

This year I am Head of Whole School Music, with particular focus on the music curriculum from Early Years up to KS3. As the nominated music lead in our school for The Juilliard collaboration, I will be working alongside the teaching artists at Juilliard, as well as other music teachers in Nord Anglia Education to ensure that the Performing Arts programme is delivered in our school successfully.

2.       What do you believe students will gain from The Juilliard Nord-Anglia Performing Arts Programme?

I believe the programme will give all our students access to a diverse range of music much more easily. The resources that have been created specifically for this programme include some fantastic core repertoire that I am really looking forward to introducing to the students.

3.       What was the highlight for you during your time at The Juilliard School?

A personal highlight was working collaboratively with music teachers from Nord Anglia Education and from Juilliard who all wanted to inspire their students to be as creative as possible. It was inspirational to be part of such a talented group.

4.       How will The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme be delivered in our Music programme in school?

We have already started to embed the curriculum into our current lessons from KS1 – KS3 (Year 1-Year 9). We believe that it will enhance the learning that is already happening in the classroom and give students access into the world of living, breathing musicians.

5.       How will the teachers at Juilliard and the teachers at BISS Puxi work together?

We are very fortunate to have a designated Juilliard teaching artist who will be visiting our school several times throughout this year. She will be able to interact with students during their learning and bring the music to life even further. Throughout this year, a team of Juilliard and Nord Anglia curriculum leaders will also continue to develop the curriculum to ensure it is as effective as possible.

6.       Will BISS Puxi students have access to Juilliard alumni?

As well as our Juilliard teaching artist’s visits, we will have a number of other opportunities to invite Juilliard alumni into our school, not just in music but in the future potentially dance and drama as well. We hope that as many students as possible can gain from these visits and will have the chance to interact with the performers.

7.       What can students expect to learn during the delivery of the in-school embedded curriculum?

An important part of the curriculum is a focus on cultural literacy. This means students will not only be listening to the music and discussing what they can hear, but they will also delve into the cultural background of the music, including geography, history, politics etc. We will also be emphasising the use of keyboards in our lessons to ensure that all our students have a basic understanding of music notation and are able to perform music that is appropriate to their ability.

8.       Do you have to have any previous musical experience to get involved?

The programme is designed so that it is accessible to everyone! Just as any other lesson, the learning will be tailored to suit the needs of individuals, regardless of their previous experience.

9.       What can we expect to see next with The Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme?

As we are an inaugural school, we are at the very start of this journey which is a huge privilege and advantage. In the coming years the programme will be implemented in all other Nord Anglia schools and the focus will then shift towards developing the drama and dance curriculum in a similar way.
