Successful Chinese Language A Workshop

23 March 2017

Chinese learning is a crucial part of the BISS students experience at our school. This year we are undertaking a review of the native Chinese language programme. We have reviewed the IB course and are currently focusing on cascading the skills and knowledge required for the IB Language A programme to the IGCSE, KS3 and Ks2 curriculums.

As part of the review, we have been working with an experienced IB Language A examiner, Ms Li Ping. We held a two-day review workshop with Ms Li in November and followed up with a workshop last Saturday 18 March in the morning for teachers looking at pre-IB skills.

IB student workshop

On Saturday 18 March in the afternoon, we held an IB Chinese A workshop for Language A students. The workshop was led by Ms Li Ping who has taught the IB programme for over 20 years in Hong Kong as well as in mainland China. During the workshop, Ms Li highlighted essential features of level 6-7 grade answers. The aim was to help students focus on key areas of improvement to lift their grades in the Paper 1 and 2 examinations.

The workshop was a great success and it was very well-received by the students. Please see quotes below from Y13 students who attended the workshop:

今天的專題討論,我受益良多。老師的金玉良言使我茅塞頓開,更清楚地知道取得高分的方法。謝謝老師在百忙之餘抽空為我們解釋、分析paper 1以及paper 2,也謝謝楊老師安排此活動!

Through today's work shop, I have been inspired by the information that the teacher gave on the course content.  Her invaluable advice has enlightened me and enhanced my understanding to further me along the path to obtaining a higher grade in the IB examination.  I greatly appreciate the teacher who delegated her time to come to our school to support our learning.  I also appreciate Ms. Yang's efforts to arrange this beneficial work shop!

At the very start, I was a bit nervous to talk to Ms. Li, not long after I found out that she was actually a really nice and straightforward person. Mr. Li gave a lot of instructions on the IB Mandarin examination and answer many of our questions. It was really helpful to us, and also helped us be more confident in how to answer the questions during the exam.

It was a great opportunity for me to have a lesson with Ms Li. With her experience of IB teaching, she helped us to unwrap the mystery of the examination and enabled me to feel more confident for the upcoming exam.

In the presentation given by Ms. Li, she covered mainly of the three sections of the IB Mandarin A SL Language and Literature course: the Written Task and the essays in Paper 1 & 2. When discussing the Written Task, Ms. Li used her experience from previous teaching to inform us of how to get high marks; to identify the differences between a level 7 and a level 6 and to understand the various genres of writing. Furthermore, she analysed how the essay structure should be like and how to achieve easy marks in the essay in Papers 1 and 2 of the exam. Overall, it was a honour to attend Ms. Li's lecture, her knowledge and experience in ways of writing Papers 1 and 2 allowed me to obtain a thorough understanding of the examination, which was vital for writing the essay in the future.
