Success with the BISS Lions

The BISS Lions have been busy in term one. Taking up many opportunities in a range of sports, whether it be participating and enjoying activities recreationally or competing against other schools in the BISS Lions kit, our students have thoroughly enjoyed their time.

Each year during term one, the school football pitches are rarely empty and this year was no exception. Fielding teams from Year 5 to Year 10, the football programme included close to 150 players who competed against other schools in the local CISSA league, which is designed to cater for all levels of player.

Our top football players were selected to represent the school at the Nord Anglia Education Chinese Regional football events which took place in Nanjing and Beijing. All players competed to the best of their ability and our teams were a regular feature in the finals of these outstanding tournaments.

In the Secondary School there were a lot of opportunities for student athletes to compete against other schools.

Our BISS Lions Under 19 Netball team trained hard all season and competed in the Shanghai netball league against other British schools in the city. Their season culminated in an ACAMIS Championship which involves schools from the Chinese region and Inner Mongolia. The girls worked hard to achieve a great result as Plate Champions.

The meteoric rise of volleyball as one of the BISS Lions’ most popular sports last year was evident again this year, with growing numbers in both the boys’ and the girls’ programmes.

The BISS Lions Under 19 Rugby team was a force to be reckoned with all season, with some incredibly competitive games taking place every week in the Shanghai and wider area league. The boys’ season finished with the prestigious ACAMIS Championship which included teams from Hong Kong, Korea and various other cities in China. The Lions made it through to the final against their historical rivals DCS, where they were locked in an extra time battle. Losing the game to a ‘golden try’ did not dampen their spirits though; the boys knew how well they had worked and how proud the rest of the school was and still are of them.

The BISS Lions Tennis team competed against the rest of Shanghai and became U19 Singles Champions in both the boys’ and girls’ competitions. Congratulations to Cindy and Kristian for their hard work and great performances.

The meteoric rise of volleyball as one of the BISS Lions’ most popular sports last year was evident again this year, with growing numbers in both the boys’ and the girls’ programmes. The teams competed well across the Shanghai season and showed development throughout. The Division 1 teams dominated in their end of season tournament in Hangzhou through outstanding team play and excellent mental strength.

BISS Lions Swimming has seen something of a renaissance this year with our new full-time swimming coaches helping almost 180 swimmers develop and improve their times. With each swimming meet, the team is inching ever closer to the goal of being one of the best teams in the Shanghai Swim League and making the podium as a team. The 13-14 age group boys are leading the charge, regularly taking silverware home after the meets, and in the last competition, the BISS Lions team missed out on a whole team podium spot by just a handful of points. Always improving and always focused, there is no doubt the bigger swimming teams in Shanghai are now looking over their shoulder at the BISS Lions.

Now in its second year, ‘The BISS Lions School of Dance’ has grown from a handful of classes to taking in sign-ups of more than 170 children. This excellent British Ballet Organisation registered school has had a wonderful effect on the children. Their creativity can flow and their performances are regularly seen at school events.

The coaches, teachers and parents are all very proud of the BISS Lions and what they have achieved this term, and we cannot wait for more action in term two. We will finish the SISAC Basketball season and look forward to more Nord Anglia Regional Events, FOBISIA Games, the SISAC Football season and much, much more.
