Week Beginning 14 March 2016

On Thursday 17 March Year 1 would like to invite parents to their Learning Showcase. This will take place along the Year 1 corridor between 2:45pm and 3:20pm. More information regarding this has been sent home via communication books.


  • On Friday 18 March children will be able to come to school dressed up in their Fairy Tale dress up clothes.
  • On Friday 25 March we will have the International Day parade. Children will have the opportunity to dress in their national costumes or in the colours of their home country.

In Literacy we are rounding off our Fairy Tales topic with a Beauty and the Beast wedding ball at the end of the week!   We will be preparing for this by writing invitations, devising and writing recipes for our ball treats, and using lots of adjectives to describe how we can dance like fairies and giants at the ball.


Puffer Fish- Phase 5- During Phonics this week, the Puffer Fish group will be learning the alternative spelling/pronuciation of ‘oa’ as in ‘o_e’. We will focus on the words- bone, tone, home, phone, woke, spoke and stone. We will also practise reading and spelling the high frequency words- children, there and more.

The Starfish- Phase 3 - This week the Starfish group will continue to practise reading and spelling words with the ‘wh’ sounds. They will then move on to learning the new sound ‘ph’ and comparing this to ‘f’. The children will  blend to read: phonics, elephant, alphabet. We will also practise the tricky words: Mr, Mrs, don’t & by.

Jelly Fish- Phase 3- This week we will continue to look at recognising the sound ear, or and ure. The focus is to ensure correct pronunciation and recognition within HFW – there will be some spelling focussed activities as usual.

Octopus- Beginning phase 4- This week in the Octopus group we will be consolidating the trigraphs air, ure and igh as we prepare to move on to consonant clusters such as bl str and gr.

Stingray-Beginning of Phase 5- As we start Phase 5 the stingrays will focus on the differences between ai and ay, ou and ow, ie and I. We will also practise the spelling of the words stay, play, chain, gain.

Sharks- Phase 3- Phonics sharks have launched into phase three phonics beginning with working on j, v and x this week, looking at CVC words like jet, vat and fox.                                                                                                                                                                                            


This week we will learn the names and properties of 3D shapes.  Using 3D nets the children will have opportunities to design their own fairy-tale castles as well as print their designs with paint and 2D shapes.


This week the children will continue to up-cycle their old t-shirts. Last week they dyed their t-shirt and learned to weave. This week they will apply new and previously taught textile skills to modify their t-shirt. You will get to see their amazing creations at our topic showcase next week!


This week we will be focusing on team work and sharing. Through play and role play the children will be learning techniques which  they can use to solve problems which may occur when playing together.

Maths– 3D shapes, 2D shapes, properties, sides, corners, edges, faces, nets, castles, printing.
