Week Beginning 1 June 2015

A huge thank you to those parents who came with us on our trip to the Botanical Gardens. The children had a fantastic time and were able to recognise some of the tropical plants from our study of the rainforests.

Messages

  • In the Summer Term, please ensure children wear sun hats on hot days to protect them when playing outside.
  • Please continue to check carefully that your child’s snacks do not contain any nuts and are healthy.
  • Please label all school uniform, snack boxes and water bottles with your child’s name to avoid items getting lost in school. Every child needs to have a water bottle to bring in each day.

Charity Action – Thanks for your support!

  • Nepal Disaster Fund – Support Nepal bracelets are for sale at the Reception 10rmb.
  • River of Hearts Clothes Donation – Donations of clothing/shoes can be placed in the collection buckets at Reception. These will support children and families in need across rural China.
  • Jayia’s Animal Rescue: 1-4 June - Collection of dog & cat food, treats, toys and bedding. Coin collection continues in the big bottles in the playground.

Literacy

Continuing with adventure stories, this week we will be writing our own stories using the planning the children did last week. They will be planning the outline of their story using a story mountain and spend each day focusing on each part: the beginning, middle and resolution. We will also be focusing on ‘tension’ and ‘build-up’ in our stories to ensure they are a true adventure story! In class we will also be reading other exciting adventure stories from different authors to help us with our banks of ideas!

Phonics

This week in phonics the children will be studying the following sounds or phases:

Stingrays: alternative /er/ and /ch/

Starfish: alternative ou sounds

Jellyfish: reading CVC, CVCC and CCVC words and sentences.

Octopus: adding the suffix ing

Sharks: plurals

Pufferfish: plurals and how spellings change with them and nouns

Maths

This week we will be re-visiting place value. We will be reviewing the value of hundreds, tens and units and applying what we have previously learnt to solve word problems. We will also apply this knowledge to help us answer addition and subtraction number sentences.

Themed Learning

In Themed Learning we will be continuing our study of the rainforests. We will be looking at the destruction of the rainforest and rainforest tribes. The children will take part in a debate for and against deforestation and learn the reasons for and against it. We will also be studying rainforests in Art and using various techniques to create exciting rainforest pictures and prints. Please look out for these in our art exhibition at the beginning of June!

In PSHCE the children will learn how to solve problems involving issues on the playground and find different ways of interacting nicely during playtimes.

In Computing Science the children will continue to learn how to code and start to create their own apps and games, changing the background and movements of the objects.

Dutch

Onze klas is nog steeds in gebruik als kliniek ‘De goede dokter’ waar het mevrouwtje met Rambamboelie naar toe moet omdat het hondje mauwt als een kat, kraait als een haan, sist als een slang en loeit als een koe. Deze week hebben we geleerd dat je zo ziek als een hond kunt zijn maar gelukkig waren de kinderen allemaal zo gezond als een vis. We hebben gekeken naar een filmpje over de werking van het hart. Daarna hebben we onze hartslag in rust geteld en daarna de hartslag na inspanning. De doktershoek is uitgebreid met een laboratorium waar de kinderen bloedonderzoek doen en de resultaten invullen. Het onderzoeksrapport wordt toegevoegd aan het patiëntendossier.

Spelling: letterdief, poortwachter, bankletters, koningsletter en vriendjesflat.

Begrijpend lezen: het verhaal in de juiste volgorde zetten.
