The students have been busy in their houses organising and choosing their events. All students will have the opportunity to participate in a minimum of 2 events .There is also an option to take part in a fun tug-of-war and house team skipping. After registration, the students will assemble on the Secondary Sports Field. The day will begin with a warm up and stretches. The events have been designed around the FOBISIA designated athletic events. Years 5 and 6 students have been using curricular PE lessons to practice their events. Certain events (track, high jump, skipping and tug of war) will be timetabled events. The remaining events of; long, triple, or three springs jump; quoit throw; shot putt and basketball push are non- timetabled events. This means that competitors can freely move around these events and perform when they have the chance.
- The week of sport will continue on Thursday 12 May when all year 5 children will attend the second Fun Football day of the year at the Shanghai American school. The event will start at 10am and finish with the closing ceremony at 12:55pm. Parents are welcome to attend the event as helpers who will assist the children with moving around to each of their games, staying hydrated and supervising snack times. Please inform your child's class teacher if you are able to help on the day.
In Literacy, we will be focusing on argumentative texts . The children will continue to look at a variety of texts and identify key pieces of language that are used to write an argument. They will learn about the Russian space dog, Laika who was sent into space and will discuss the ethics of this experiment. The children will build up ideas for this argument and will write a balanced argument at the end of the week.
In Maths this week we will looking at the relationship bwteen fractions, decimals and percentages. The children will complete a variety of challenges linked to percentages and will learn how to express amounts in decimals, fractions and percentages.
In Themed Learning this week the children will discuss the homework task that was set last week. They will have a class debate about what governments should spend their money on. One of these arguments is the amount of money that is spent on space travel and exploration. The children will use their debating skills from Literacy lessons to help form and structure their arguments for a class debate.

De Razende Reporters van SDS werken aan hun laatste twee artikelen voor het Dagblad van SDS. Over een week moet het dagblad af zijn, dus de redactie zet alle zeilen bij om de deadline te halen. Sommige ouders zullen verrast worden door een onaangekondigd interview. Wij hopen dat dit niet teveel overlast oplevert en dat de reporters zich niet te opdringerig gedragen.
Year 3 en 4 krijgen een gezamenlijke krant en Year 5 en 6 ook.
Spelling en woordbeeld
We herhalen met spelling in elke groep de klankengroepen (letterdief, letterzetter, 2-tekenklanken en poortwachter). Het automatiseren van deze spellingmoeilijkheden is voor veel kinderen een enorme klus. We steken er daarom extra tijd in.
Bi(e)bbezoek en Estafette
Denk aan het meenemen van de bi(e)bboeken op maandag (Year 3, 5 en 6) en dinsdag (Year 4). Estafette doen we op maandag (Year 3, 5 en 6) en donderdag (Year 4).
Year 5 Spanish Mrs Jolly
Next week we will learn about Body Parts. We will do games to learn body parts and use pictures to label them.
Homework this week: There will be no homework this week due to the long weekend.
Year 5/ 6 French – Miss Caldwell
This week we will be continuing to practise using prepositions to explain where things are. We will also be using simple directions to follow and create our own dance routines!
Homework this week is to create a dance routine to share with the class. We must be able to direct them with their steps (left, right, forward, backwards, jump, etc).
Year 5 French - Miss Rae
Next week in French, we will be learning about Summer. We will be discussing different festivals and carnivals, researching the different outfits that are worn at these and designing our own carnival mask.
Homework this week is to spot the difference in the pictures and write the difference in French.
The students will learn the accessory words.
Homework: The students are expected to copy the new words and practise the dialog from the text.
