  • In our classrooms we will be learning about some new animal friends who will help us to be our best, such as ‘Persevering Parrots’, ‘Trying Turtles’ and ‘Proud Peacocks’. Watch this space to hear more about them.
  • Chinese New Year Celebrations - We are excited about our upcoming celebrations in school and at the weekend fair on Sunday 4 February. We will also be celebrating in our classes with our dress up ‘Red day’ where you are invited to wear your favourite red clothes, or Chinese style clothing on Friday 9 February.

This week we will start our preparations for Chinese New Year. We will make Chinese lanterns to decorate the classroom and we will transform our home corner into a traditional Chinese style home.

This week the children will learn two nursery rhymes; ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘1,2,3,4,5 Once I Caught A Fish Alive’. We will encourage the children to learn these rhymes to improve their listening skills and build up their knowledge of these traditional rhymes. The children will also go on a ‘Sound Walk’ around the school and listen to sounds in their environment. They will then have the opportunity to share what they have heard with their classmates. To build on this, the children will listen to animals sounds and try to identify the animal that is making them.

In Mandarin, the children will be listening to a story about Chinese New Year. They will also sing the traditional ‘Happy New Year’ song. Throughout the week, the children will make a dragon and a lion for our Chinese New Year parade and practise some Chinese writing.

We have had a lot of excitement due to the snow. The children had a great time making a snowman and playing in the snow. The timing was excellent as our learning before the snow fall had been about ice, freezing temperatures and outdoor wear in colder climates. Please make sure that children have hats throughout the winter as we continue outdoor play all year round.

During the snow fall we talked with the children about the swirling snowstorm in the story ‘We’re   Going On a Bear Hunt’ please see the link below and watch this story with your child.

We have had some great mathematical learning happening in both classrooms. The children have been building towers using ten connecting blocks, measuring and comparing them. We have used this to explore simple additions. Next week we will build on this by increasing our towers to fifteen. All of the children have well developed number and counting skills. This learning is obviously being well supported at home.

Chinese New Year is approaching and this is a great way to celebrate the culture and customs of our host country. In the coming weeks we will be making dragons in each class, as well as drums and decorations. The children will be learning about the story behind Chinese New Year. We hope that you can all join us on Friday the 9th for our Nursery family celebrations. We would love it if some of our Chinese parents could come and support some of the activities on this day. When making the decorations the children will be doing measuring, using scissor and developing fine motor skills by threading.

We are also concentrating on developing listening skills. The children will be playing listening games and we will go on a sound walk around the school to learn about the sounds in our environment. Many of the children are now hearing and saying initial sounds in words. Some of the children are able to link these to letters. We highly recommend that children have a lot of exposure to letters by having alphabet books at home and an alphabet freeze on the wall somewhere at home. We will start our Chinese New Year theme by reading children a story about the Zodiac. We will talk about some of our traditions and the children will learn to greet  each other in Mandarin and wish a ‘Happy New Year’. We are planning to have a dragon dance parade so they will make a big dragon craft altogether and some instruments and practise dancing like dragon lions. Lanterns ,fireworks and many other tradional celebrating decorations will be made through the weeks.

Deze week besteden we extra aandacht aan voorlezen naar aanleiding van de Nationale Voorleesdagen.  We zetten de tijger centraal naar aanleiding van het prentenboek van 2018 Ssstt! De tijger slaapt!   Hopelijk wordt de tijger niet wakker!
