Week Beginning 17 April 2017

TERM 3 ECA/BISCAP/BISS Lions Swimming: Programmes will begin this week, Monday 17 April, and run until Friday 16June 2017.


  • Now the weather is getting warmer, please could you encourage your child to bring in a hat and also a water bottle so that they remain well hydrated during the day.
  • Our school librarians are in school until 4:30pm on a Monday and Tuesday.  If, as parents, you would like to borrow books you can set up afamily account.


We will be working on  information text about insects this week . Children will recap on the features of non-fiction text. They will have the opportunity to research about a certain insect and produce a fact sheet to explain what they have learnt and practise grouping relevant information.

This week during Maths lessons we will be focusing on using vocabulary linked to time. We will be learning the names of the days of the week and the months of the year. We will also be putting these into the correct order and solving problems involving them. We will then move onto estimating and measuring time using seconds and minutes.

Over the next few weeks we will have a repeat focus on the first 200 high frequency words. The children will be practising the spelling of these words in particular. We will also look at sentence substitution – choosing different words to place in a sentence.

Puffer Fish

This week the Puffer Fish phonics group will be revising all of the sounds and tricky words in Phase 2.



This week Starfish will be learning alternative spellings for n, r and m. They will learn that  ‘n’ can be spelt as ‘kn’ and ‘gn’, ‘r’ as ‘wr’ and ‘m’ as ‘mb’. The children will practise reading and spelling polysyllabic words with these spellings such as: gnawing, gnome, knitting, knocking, wrongly, wretched, combing and climbing . 


This week Stingrays will be learning the final digraph (er) and trigraph (ure). We will be using our blending skills to read words such as tiger, fern, herb, kerb,  sure, pure, cure and picture.  We will also be revisiting the tricky words from phase 3 such as was, all, they and my. In the final few sessions of the week we will be assessing all the sounds and digraphs from phase 3.


We will practise ‘ure’ and ‘er.’ Children will brainstorm words with these spelling patterns. They will practise hearing and identifying the sounds. They will also practise using ‘ure’ and ‘er’ words to compose sentences.


This week the Jelly Fish group will continue to learn and apply the sounds ay, ou, ie and ea. They will be blending them together with other sounds when reading and spelling words i.e. play, day, pour, tour, pie, tie, ear, hear and tear. They will also be learning how to read and spell the tricky words oh, old, their, said and so.


This week in Themed Learning, we will be studying the parts and life cycle of a plant. We will be labelling and explaining the roles of parts of a plant as well as planting and growing our own bean plants. Additionally we will be looking at common trees and identifying if they are deciduous or coniferous.

Over the coming weeks the children will focus on developing Microsoft Office skills; specifically with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint. The children will develop typing skills and key skills in finding and using; text boxes, bold text, italics, changing fonts and font colours. All of which will be developed under our topic theme of Plants and Insects.

De kinderen van KS1 hebben deze week hun mening gegeven over wat nu volgens hen kunst is.  Deze week verkennen we vormen, vlakken, kleuren en lijnen met Miro, Picasso en Mondriaan. 

We kijken naar de wereld door de ogen van Mondriaan en schrijven recensies bij de kunstwerken van de kubisten.
