Andrew Lancaster

Andrew Lancaster

BSc (Hons), PGCE, NPQH, Magnolia Award

Andrew has worked at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi since 2013 and has led the school as Principal since 2019. Previously, as Head of Secondary, Andrew oversaw a sustained increase in the school’s academic results for IGCSE and IBDP students, ensuring outstanding academic results that have enabled two thirds of our BISS Puxi students to reach the world's top 100 universities in the last year.

These results have been achieved through bringing alive Nord Anglia’s ‘Be Ambitious’ philosophy and applying it to the school’s five key pillars of Academic Excellence, STEAM with MIT, Performing Arts with Juilliard, Internationalism and Sport. At the heart of all of this sits his philosophy of ensuring that pupils love coming to school, that they are safe, happy and can grow their own passions through a personalised journey, supported by highly qualified and professional teachers. He is a strong advocate of wellbeing and the role of the community – with parents, staff and students supporting each other to ensure every child makes progress – both socially and academically.

Originally from Northamptonshire in England, Andrew has worked in education for over twenty-seven years. He attended the University of Sheffield, studying Geography as an undergraduate. He then moved to St. Mary’s, Twickenham to study a PGCE in Geography and History. He began his career as a Teacher of Geography, an ardent enthusiast in helping children to understand the world around them and their role in making a positive difference through a sound understanding of the challenges we face as a global society.

As a keen advocate of experiential learning, Andrew took students on numerous fieldtrips to extend their understanding and bring Geography to life – both in the UK and overseas. This continued as he took up a senior leadership post at a school in Northamptonshire. He accompanied History students on their tours of France, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and Hungary, exploring the architecture and history of many beautiful European cities. He has also encouraged students to travel and to challenge themselves through exciting sporting and community service activities – kayaking in the Ardeche, France, sailing on the Mediterranean, skiing in Andorra and trekking in Botswana and Zambia.

The opportunity to work at BISS Puxi presented Andrew with the chance to explore the international school environment and the prospect of a new challenge in a different part of the world. Andrew and his wife, Lisa, first visited China in 2004 and were determined to return to explore further. They have two young sons who have benefitted from the culture of shared learning within the international community. In his own teaching he is a great believer in making learning relevant to students’ lives and exploring new ideas through effective questioning and discussion, challenging and enjoyable engagement, regular feedback, and peer and self- improvement strategies. As leader of The British International School, Shanghai, these values remain true today; the practice of excellent teaching and learning remain the key driver and motivation in supporting learners each and every day.

Andrew sees supporting the social, emotional and pastoral needs of pupils as a priority, partnered with a balanced curriculum that allows students to find their passions and be the very best they can be.

Andrew has varied interests – he is an enthusiastic footballer and runner. He enjoys listening to music, reading an eclectic mix of books and spending time with his wife and his two young sons. In particular, Andrew enjoys taking part in community events that bring everyone together in this part of Shanghai. There is always much to discover in Shanghai itself and so, Andrew and his family have enjoyed exploring the city over the years and continue to find it as vibrant and exciting as ever. They also relish visiting new locations both within China, as well as travelling further afield in Asia.
