BA, PGCE, MEDL
Originally from South Africa, Shona finished her Bachelor of Arts in English and History at the University of Natal in 1993. She spent a number of years travelling, and then, settled in London for a number of years. Looking for a change in direction, Shona taught English in South Korea for two years and at this point, realised that she wanted to teach, so returned to South Africa to complete her PGCE. In her first teaching role, Shona worked in London in order to familiarise herself with the British Curriculum. At West Acton Primary School she taught Year 2 students and was the EAL and Science Coordinator. After three years, she gained her QTS and taught in Seoul for a further two years. During this time, Shona taught Year 3 and was the Science Coordinator. After a number of years at other international schools in South East Asia, Shona arrived in Shanghai where she has worked for five years at another international school until coming to BISS.
Shona is a very optimistic person who is interested in learning new things and who recently completed her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership. She is always looking at ways in which she can develop essential leadership skills in her students. She feels that it is very important for students to have clear expectations and goals that will challenge them. In the classroom, values of respect and empathy are very important as well as an ethos of always tryng ones best and realising that mistakes are learning moments. As a teacher, Shona develops good relationships with her students by understanding what interests them, being open and approachable, and taking part in ECAs. Furthermore, she understands the need to be a good role model and exhibit the same values and expectations that she expects from her students.
Throughout her life Shona has always loved taking part in sports. She enjoys cycling, tennis and swimming, although she is always ready to try something different and has recently learnt Taekwondo and Gumdo. Another great interest is travel and Shona is looking forward to being able to explore more of China. She also has a real interest in reading, in particular, Post Modernism fiction and poetry.
