    James Cross

    English Teacher

    James Cross

James’ avid enthusiasm for teaching began to develop after he graduated from Exeter University with honours in English Literature and Film. While studying, he attained his TEFL qualification and spent his summers at various language schools across Italy. It was during this experience that James first became enamoured with the concept of teaching abroad while experiencing culture. Pursuing this further, James began to tutor privately in the UK while he studied for a Graduate Diploma in Law, finding intrinsic reward in helping his students attain top results across their exams. After briefly toying with the notion of becoming a lawyer, James decided there was nothing he would rather do than teach. He began his career in Birmingham as part of the Teach First programme, and from there went abroad to teach English for two years in Dubai.

James feels that this continuous exposure to varied global practice across a range of cultures has vastly improved his teaching practice and has given him diverse experience.

James vehemently believes that literature and language are fundamental to any student’s preparation for the challenges of an ever-changing world. James applied for a position with BISS Puxi because he found the idea of working within an intellectually stimulating environment coupled with life in proximity to the vast, populous city of Shanghai, persistently appealing. James has maintained an interest in Chinese dynasties since his schooldays, and he hopes to explore and immerse himself in the rich culture, perhaps learning a spot of Mandarin along the way.
