Mário Castro

BPhEd , PGDSM, PGDICT, M.Ed.

Mário is a Physical Education (PE) Teacher, who was born and raised in Portugal. In 2005 he achieved his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Sports, and then, went on to complete his PG in Sport Management in 2007, and in 2009, completed his PG ICT. In 2012, Mário successfully completed a Master’s Degree in PE Education. He began his teaching career in Portugal in 2006, at the same time as working as a professional football coach in the second and third Portuguese divisions. The team with which he worked had great success as national champions of the second division in 2007/2008 and 2010/2011. Mário continued as a coach until 2016, when he made the move to China to be a Director of Football and Head Coach with a number of clubs including Figo Football Academy, Toulouse Football Club, Ebbe Sand Academy and lastly, Borussia Mönchengladbach. Mário’s aim was to help develop football in China.

Mário strongly believes that physical activity and sport contributes to the integral development of students, in their physical, psychological, social, cognitive, communicative and ethical-moral dimensions, and is a key part of the academic success. He creates an environment of respect, hard work and responsibility in his classes but with a strong focus on enjoyment, providing students with a guided discovery experience as a teaching methodology that creates a relationship of freedom and responsibility in all students.

In his spare time, Mário loves to be with his family, especially with his one year old daughter. He enjoys spending time with friends, discovering new places in Shanghai and socialising in the wonderful restaurants and terraces. Mário also loves to travel and spends holiday time visiting his family in Portugal and Italy. Naturally, Mário enjoys a wide variety of sports, in particular, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, swimming and racquet sports. He makes sure he keeps up with his own football skills by taking part in several tournaments around Shanghai.
