This weekend, and early into next week, I shall be attending the Federation of British Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) ‘Heads and Senior Leadership Conference’ in Singapore. The conference is being hosted by Tanglin Trust School, one of the oldest members of the Federation. On Saturday and Sunday, we will experience some excellent professional development workshops along with some insightful Keynote speakers. The theme of the conference is ‘Be Inspired!’ and the famous British explorer, TED lecturer and sustainability champion, Robert Swan will open the conference to set the tone. The second speaker will be Roy Blatchford (Director of the National Education Trust). On the Monday of the conference, I will attend the “Heads Business Meeting” and make a presentation on behalf of the school.
On Tuesday of this week, I was pleased to be invited to an Educational themed Breakfast Briefing hosted by Mr. Giles Lever, the British Ambassador to Vietnam, at his residence. The guest of honour was Lord Puttnam of Queensgate who is the British Prime Minister’s Trade and Culture envoy to Vietnam. Our community might recall that BIS Hanoi received a visit from Lord Puttnam last year when he toured the school and made a presentation to our older students. At the time, he told me he was extremely impressed with what he saw and I was thrilled when, around the Breakfast table on Tuesday, he implored the people there to go and visit BIS Hanoi as we are an excellent school. Praise indeed from a person who has visited so many educational institutions and was, until recently, Chancellor of the Open University and the University of Sunderland in the UK.
One of the highlights of my week is my Golf ECA each Wednesday with a group of 15 students at Long Bien Golf Course - only 5 minutes or so from the school. It has given me great pleasure to see how they have progressed under the guidance of the regular golf coaches. The ECA programme is so important to the holistic development of our students and I am extremely pleased to be part of it. The staff, aided by the organisation of Mr. Mark Atkinson (ECA Coordinator), really do produce an ECA Programme that we can all be proud of.
I do hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.
Mr Anthony Rowlands, Principal
