Mr Rowlands - Weekly Update 27th March

31 March 2015

I am pleased to report that this week I have formally dispatched, on behalf of BIS Hanoi, our application to become members of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA). In the next few months, we will receive a visit from members of FOBISIA’s executive committee as part of the application procedure. FOBISIA is a well-established organisation and has been in existence since 1988 when 5 Principals from British-type schools in Jakarta, Singapore, Manila, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur met at the British International School Jakarta. From those early days the federation has grown to a current membership of 49 schools. On its website it states that “The overall aim of the Federation is to promote excellence in good British-style education in our schools, and to provide opportunities for inter-school competitions and enrichment programmes.”

The schools in the federation support each other in many ways:
- Two meetings a year for school Principals
- A Senior Leadership Conference
- Professional Development opportunities for academic and administration staff
- Sporting competitions between member schools
- Music and cultural events involving member schools

These events take place in various member schools around the region. This will allow our students and staff the opportunity to visit other quality schools and meet likeminded people. There is a strong commitment from our group of schools to FOBISIA. Mr Shaun Williams, the BIS Group CEO, has recently completed two years as Chairman of the federation and both our schools in HCMC are currently members. This commitment is clearly shown by the following statement from Mr. Williams and the photographs below:
“The BIS Group of Schools in Vietnam were delighted to welcome 49 Head Teachers and Principals from around the region to Vietnam last weekend. The Annual FOBISIA Business Meeting was jointly hosted by BIS and BVIS in HCMC. FOBISIA is a membership organisation of the very best British type schools in the region. Parents will know FOBISIA for the many events that it organises for children as well as providing regional training for teachers. The Heads came from all around the Asia region including Mongolia and India and conducted a very productive two days of business.”

I will keep the school community updated with regard to the progress of our application. I do hope that you all have a most pleasant weekend.

Mr Anthony Rowlands - Principal of BIS Hanoi
