Mr Anthony Rowlands Weekly Update 19th February

19 February 2016

Our eldest students in Year 13 are now preparing conscientiously for their final A Level examinations which will take place in May. In amongst these examination preparations, they have, over the past few months, been busily preparing their University applications which is the next stage of their educational careers.

Of course, to get into the University of their choice they will need to get the necessary grades at A Level. However, getting offers from good Universities around the world is not only about outstanding examination results, as these establishments look for other areas where a student might excel and contribute. Often they are looking for students who are creative and can think quickly; it’s often not about what they already know, it’s how they approach something which they haven’t already learned.

A senior staff member from a Russell Group University (a group made up of the top UK Universities) recently stated that they were disappointed with applicants who had been excessively tutored as it often robs them of the ability to think creatively and critically. These students, he said, seemed capable within their comfort zone but then, when moved into unfamiliar territory, they failed to cope with expectations. At BIS Hanoi, we do not create students who are just "crammed" with subject knowledge but students who able to enquire, analyse, think, create, reflect and persevere.

We are extremely fortunate to have a wonderful school campus set in a very "green" environment. Often, when I am at my desk and look out of my office window I find it hard to believe that I am in Hanoi. I know that our school community is thrilled that our students can be educated in such pleasant surroundings. We are determined that global and local environmental issues are important factors for us at the school. We are keen to ensure that we are, in the future, officially recognised as a "Green" School and are taking steps towards this. We are already growing produce in our very own BIS Garden. Vegetables grown by us were recently sold at our Winter Carnival and more produce is currently being grown as can be seen by the photographs below. The amount of work that our staff and students put into this project is quite astounding and I am extremely grateful to them.

I would like to wish you all a very pleasant and peaceful weekend.

Mr Anthony Rowlands, Principal
