At British International School Hanoi our students have really shown how much they CARE by helping in a number of different ways to help our community partner ‘Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation’.

Early this year Mr.Chris Humphrey, the Blue Dragon schools and sponsorship officer, came in to talk to some of our secondary students to raise awareness of the awful situation some children here in Hanoi find themselves in.  He did a presentation highlighting the problems of homelessness and child trafficking.  He explained how many young people for a number of differing reasons find themselves living rough on the streets.

Blue Dragon had recently opened a new shelter in the city and asked British International School Hanoi for help; they were desperately short of items such as soap, toothbrushes, shampoo and deodorants.  Year 8 & 9, as part of their community project held a drive to collect donations in the form of toiletries.

In primary one of our students, with the help of mum, designed some beautiful lucky Tet envelopes.  Quynh Anh from class 6B along with her friends sold the envelopes to teachers, staff and students.  They proved hugely popular and actually sold out in day 1!  More were ordered for the following day, which also sold out very quickly, raising an amazing 14 million VND.

In Year 11 some of our students set up a very special ‘Project Impact’ ECA.  Showing what kind hearts they have, they arranged a number of fund raising activities, including an extremely popular bake sale. We contacted Blue Dragon to see if they had a wish list for other items that they may need. With this information to hand, the Year 11 students organized a shopping expedition with the money they had collected and the proceeds from our primary students. After a very successful outing they came back laden down with items such as towels, stationary, school bags, text books and more toiletries.

Overall, from the fabulous work our students have been doing over term 2, we had collected 10 x large boxes of much needed items.  We arranged a special visit for some of the students, from both primary and secondary who had been involved, to visit Dragon House at the drop in center. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to see firsthand the good work that Blue Dragon are doing to help the unfortunate children who are living and sleeping rough on the streets here in Hanoi.  Here are a few words of reflection from Chau Anh from class 11S.

“Our visit to the ‘Dragon House’ was an enlightening experience for all of us as a group. We were able to speak to Chris— the Schools and Sponsorship Officer at Blue Dragon- about the various foundation targets. Being able to see the facility, and talk to someone who thoroughly understands these problems made us recognise the true impact of these issues and the action that needs to be taken to combat them.”

I would like to thank everyone involved who has helped to make such a difference to help combat homelessness with ‘Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation’.

Mr. Kevin Halpin, Community Service Manager
