Feedback Drives Improvement at BIS Hanoi

Today, we published our Key Stage 3 reports. This report presents students and parents with feedback on subject understanding and level of effort in study skills. The assessment is based on the Key Stage 3 Be Ambitious framework (Below), which BIS Hanoi teachers use to assess work in Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9.

Be Ambitious

Targets are not included in the report. Personalised targets for improvement are very important and can be found in your child’s assessed work.

Parents’ Evening and its relationship to assessment and reporting
Sometimes a report cannot capture everything a parent needs to know about their child’s learning. In addition to the report, and the targets recorded on assessed work, BIS Hanoi provides feedback via the parent evening event. Parents’ evening is an important event in the learning cycle of a British international school. It provides an opportunity for parents to talk with teachers about report grades and assessment. It is an ideal opportunity to ask questions of teachers and learn more about the feedback they are providing to your child. Meeting with your child’s subject teacher provides an opportunity for them to give you detailed, personalised feedback about your child. It also provides an opportunity for parents to share information with staff, which will help us to understand your child even better.

How can we make feedback for students and parents even better?
Research has shown that feedback via reports, assessment and parents’ evening is critical to a child making progress in their learning. Consequently, BIS Hanoi reviews its assessment and reporting practices, regularly. Currently, an assessment committee is reviewing how to improve the accuracy and value of Key Stage 3 assessment. The work of the assessment committee will be completed in February 2019. BIS Hanoi will then form a reporting committee to liaise with parents to identify the best way to structure reports for parents so that they can support their children’s learning.
