Dear parents,

Today is Safer Internet Day 2018! This is an event which is celebrated globally and this year with the slogan “Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you”. I held an assembly this morning to talk to students about the importance of creating positive online connections and looking after your digital wellbeing.

Digital wellbeing is all about looking after yourself and others online, recognising how the internet can impact on us and knowing what to do if something goes wrong. The online world is such a huge part of our lives today, it’s very important that we understand how to use it safely, sensibly and with an awareness of how it can impact on us. I gave the students lots of ideas this morning to help them create, connect and share respect in a positive way online. The students also completed some discussion activities and as a tutor group completed a pledge about how they will look after their digital wellbeing.

I’d like to use this opportunity to draw your attention towards online gaming and virtual world platforms. These websites are hugely popular with young people of all ages. The real dangers associated with these platforms are the ability to communicate and share inappropriate content with anyone and of any age. One such website is called but there are many more like it. To help you support your child online, we have created a digital parenting section of the website. On this page you will find advice and support regarding internet safety. If you have any further questions or concerns then please get in contact with the school and we will be happy to help.

Kind regards,

James Trett, Teacher of Computer Science
