Tet Holiday: The Season of Giving at BIS Hanoi

This week, as we head towards the most important holiday in the Vietnamese culture – the Lunar New Year (or Tết), students of BIS Hanoi had a fantastic opportunity to nurture a respectful and caring sense of social responsibility and build friendships with students from Hy Vong School and Xa Dan School.

On Tuesday (January 22), the students from Hy Vong School visited Year 6 students to watch a part of their Production ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’, a tale of adventure on the high seas with menacing pirates and a plethora of interesting characters. After the show, Year 6 students showed their friends from Hy Vong School the dance moves so that they could join them on the stage and perform them together! Our students presented art materials and stationary gifts, which were donated by all of our Primary students as the gifts for their friends.

“The partnership between BIS Hanoi and Hy Vong School has been very much meaningful for us. It is a great opportunity for our students to interact with BIS students as this helps them to improve their social and communication skills in a very child-friendly way. Our children are very excited every time they see the bus from BIS Hanoi coming to pick them up,” said Ms Pham Thi Thu Huong, Vice Principal of the Hy Vong School.

Continuing the theme of caring and giving back to the community, on Wednesday (January 23), Year 7 students visited their friends at Xa Dan School – a school for the hearing and speaking-impaired students in Hanoi. We donated seven sets of laptops, projectors and speakers which will provide great support for their learning.

“Every time BIS students come, our children are very happy and excited to participate in the activities with them. This time, the visit is not only about meeting our children but also giving us a donation. As you may have noticed, there is a huge lack of facilities at our school such as projectors and laptops, especially as the early-year students still have to use the very old television at the moment. We really appreciate the support from BIS Hanoi,” said Ms Pham Thuy Chung, Kindergarten Team Leader at Xa Dan School.

Nguyen Vu Dang Cuong, 8I, was impressed as he has seen our friends from Xa Dan School become more confident in communicating with others as compared to his visit last year.

The rest of the BIS Community has also been doing wonderful work to help the disadvantaged children in collaboration with our community partner, the ‘Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation’. Many teachers, parents and students have donated much-needed toiletries, which have been collected at the main entrance of BIS Hanoi.

At the Assembly today, we welcomed Mr Tom Adams, Schools Officer from Blue Dragon. He was here to share the stories of the children at Blue Dragon with our students.

"I am really happy since we have received lots of gifts from BIS Hanoi. These gifts will be sent to rural children who are not able to buy themselves. I would like to thank BIS School and students for this fantastic opportunity," said Tom.

As Tet is just around the corner, let us all take a moment to give back, give thanks and lend a helping hand to those in need!
