STEAM Challenge Days 2

STEAM Challenge Days for Phase 2 students

On Wednesday and Thursday this week, Phase 2 students in Primary took part in the STEAM Challenge inspired by MIT. Working in teams of mixed year groups the students used their minds and hands to create a superhero inspired by nature.

Mind and hand is the philosophy of MIT and we are incorporating it more explicitly into our STEAM teaching. The challenge was launched on Wednesday (May 22) in the theatre, the students listened to an explanation of mind and hand, and how we all have skills to think and create. They were then divided into teams to work collaboratively together, the mixed year groupings proved to be very productive as each team member took part in the idea generation, then the design stage, and then the team discussion about which design to choose. Each student brought different knowledge and ideas to the team.

After lunch, the teams started to make their superhero. Their camaraderie and collaboration was a real pleasure to observe. Everybody was having fun, learning, and being a great team member.

On the second day (May 23), the teams completed the making stage, and then created a short video of their superhero’s story. Again the students had a great time using and developing their skills.

The STEAM Challenge cumulated in an assembly on Friday afternoon where the ‘superheroes’ made an appearance at the start, and then we all sat back to watch each team’s video. The laughter and smiles were lovely to see.

I’m sure the students are now already looking forward to next year’s MIT challenges!
