Student voice is very important at BIS

Dear Parents,

Last week, you may have read the article in our BIS Weekly News about our amazing students who were selected to attend the NAE UNICEF forum at the UN Headquarters in New York. If you missed this article, you may click here to find out about their adventures over the summer.

This morning, I was very proud to listen to Ha Minh and Sung Woo as they started in their role as Global Goals Ambassadors by delivering a highly entertaining and informative assembly to our Secondary students and staff. The facts are clear: approximately 25% of the world population is under the age of 18 years; children need to have a voice, make good choices and make a positive impact on the lives of others. I look forward to hearing more from Ha Minh and Sung Woo as they develop and lead ECAs which students can attend, based around the principles of the Global Goals.

This week, I had the pleasure of joining with Mr Airdrie for the purpose of interviewing Year 13 students who applied for the role of Head Girl. At the same time, Mr Westropp and Mr. Webb conducted the interviews for Head Boy. These positions are new to BIS this year and in addition to creating real opportunities for leadership, we aim to provide an improved structure for students to have a voice and help to develop our school even further. The conversations with our young leaders were thought-provoking. Students talked about ways BIS teachers had been preparing them to take on such roles through instilling confidence and providing activities which challenge them to be more ambitious. Needless-to-say, we were very impressed by the quality of the applicants and after a great deal of deliberation, Valerie and Trung Tien were selected to commence roles in these prestigious positions. Congratulations, not only to Valerie and Trung Tien but to all the students who rose to the challenge and sent in applications!

Parents at BIS

As I type this message, it is wonderful to know that our upcycling of old school uniforms has started in earnest. Approximately a dozen, hard-working parents, from our Friends of BIS Group, are busy sorting uniform in preparation for the coming ECAs. New items will be made from the old uniforms and sold at our International fair in November. The money raised will help our Community Partners here in Hanoi. Thank you for your support in helping our campus to become more environmentally aware!

  • Meet the Teacher

It was amazing to see so many parents of Primary attend our Meet the Teacher and Meet our Librarian sessions this week. Next week, parents of Secondary students are invited to attend parent information mornings which are specific to different year groups. I look forward to seeing many of you from Tuesday to Thursday.

I hope you all have a lovely long weekend. A brief reminder that school will be closed on Monday for National Day.
