Looking at Learning at BIS Hanoi

We are all life-long learners. The workplace is always changing, and we learn new skills to adapt to it. This year, across the globe, employees adapted to a “new normal” in 2020 in response to the global pandemic. BIS Hanoi was no different. As part of Nord Anglia Education, BIS Hanoi was one of the first schools in the world to provide an adapted comprehensive curriculum via our Virtual School offering. The quality of our provision, which was recognized by other professionals around the world, was only possible because our teachers quickly adopted new technologies and rapidly developed their online teaching skills.

Today, I am grateful that we have returned to our beautiful campus, where we teach full classes of students but our quest for learning excellence continues. This week, we have been “looking at learning” in the Secondary school. All teachers have been observed by their peers and have received feedback on What Went Well (WWW) and Even Better If (EBI). I was observed teaching my 21st Century Skills classes by the Principal and the IBDP Coordinator and received some excellent advice on classroom positioning and whole class reading engagement. Elsewhere, staff have been meeting with student consultation groups to find out how we can improve our pastoral and academic provision. We have been scrutinizing data and asking questions about our trend lines at IGCSE and IBDP. We have collected a mass of evidence and we will enjoy reflecting upon it and planning the next steps of our school improvement journey.

Nord Anglia Self Evaluation ensures we get better every year

These next steps will inform our Nord Anglia Self Evaluation process. Annually, we review the strengths of our school and identify areas for further development. The deeper we look the more powerful our findings. This year, our Looking at Learning drive has revealed important evidence that will increase the impact of our self-evaluation process. I have been teaching over 25 years and I feel more energized today than at any other time in my career. This is the result of working with such outstanding people. The students and staff I engage with daily are fully committed to improving their performance. I am delighted that BIS Hanoi has developed an environment where these learning ambitions can be pursued through amazing learning opportunities supported by world class resources.
