BIS STEAM team shines in the virtual STEAM Festival 2022

Last week, on Thursday and Friday, four students from Key Stage 3 and two from Primary took part in the annual Nord Anglia Education Southeast Asia STEAM festival. The festival ran virtually, as it did last year due to travel restrictions, between 11 schools in 7 different countries, with over 80 students taking part.

The theme of this year’s festival was extreme weather. Students were able to use the knowledge they had gained over the year in STEAM classes when doing our MIT challenges, which also focused on extreme weather. 

Here at BIS, we were partnered with Regents International School Pattaya in Thailand. This meant they were our buddy school and our students had video calls with them to discuss the challenges and share their work with them.

The main challenge that ran over the two days was for students to prepare ideas to present to different countries or commissions about how to solve the problems or re-envision how cities might look and work if sea levels continue to rise due to global warming. As well as the main task, mini challenges were set during both days that students had to work on. These ranged from codebreaking, brain teasers, and solving riddles to find the task, to presenting a case study on forest fires in America to our buddy school. It was quite a hectic day for our six students as they had to work very dynamically, coordinate as a team, and delegate who would work on what task to ensure that they got everything done within the set deadlines.

Despite the organised chaos that it was, our students did fantastically and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We were particularly proud of our two Year 6 students (Kaeden and Ji Yoon (Claire)) who showed such good presentation skills. Our two Year 7 students (Seung Min (Lucas) and Tae Hoo) showed great communication skills, while Gi Yeon (Year 8) and Seo Bin (Year 9) took more of a leadership role, being the older students, but still ensured that everyone felt involved and part of the team.
