Staff Profile: Byron Wood

Byron Wood

Science Teacher / Head of Year 11

PhD The effects of forest disturbance and fragmentation on fruit-feeding butterflies in Trinidad, The Open University, U.K.

BSc (Hons) Biology, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, U.K.

PGCE Secondary Science, University of Northumbria, U.K.

After his PhD in tropical butterfly ecology, and postdoctoral research on the genetics of urban butterfly populations in the U.K, Byron moved into teaching. After two years in the U.K. as a Primary school practitioner, he moved to Kenya with his family to teach in an International School in Kenya. In a 6 year period he held various roles from Head of Year, Head of ICT, Head of Science and Head of Key Stage, before moving to open a new school as the Deputy Headteacher of both Primary and Secondary. He then became the Pastoral Deputy Headteacher of the new Secondary School for 3 years, also teaching Science and IB Biology. He then moved to Saudi Arabia for 6 years where he was the Secondary School Assistant Headteacher in a British International School, Secondary Safeguarding DSL, and Biology iGCSE, Science and PSHE teacher.

Out of school Byron loves all sport, from football to tennis to golf, both watching and playing. The promotion of Leeds United to the Premier League coincides eloquently with his elevation to the BIS Hanoi team. He also loves to play guitar and sing, to anyone who will listen, and has a deep love of nature, conservation, photography and international travel.
