Mr. Simon Higham, Principal
Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, inventor and engineer said, ‘I love those who can smile in trouble and grow brave by reflection.’
In the first Weekly Highlights of this academic year, I wrote the following to all parents:
‘Whether this is your first week as a parent at our school or whether this is your 9th year with us, thank you for choosing our school to educate, motivate and inspire your children.’
From this, I would like to highlight 3 words: educate, motivate and inspire.
Throughout this term, it has been our privilege to work alongside your wonderful children. I sincerely hope that we have motivated them to learn and think differently through the many varied and wide-ranging opportunities that we have provided both inside and outside of the classroom.
Looking back, we have seen the start of new and exciting learning projects from the very youngest of our school population in Fundinotots to our Year 13s beginning the final year of their A level journey that will lead them to some of the best universities across the globe.
We have seen assemblies, concerts, performances, entry and exit points, sports days, workshops and events that celebrate our Vietnamese culture and heritage and our global perspective.
Visitors who have entered our school for the first time this term, have consistently commented upon the warmth and openness that is embedded into our school culture and have fed back to us all about how polite, courteous and well-motivated to learn our students are.
Such a positive culture does not come easy and in fact, as a school leader I believe it is one of the most challenging areas to develop and nurture. Our culture is something that we must all be proud of when we look back on not only this term but across the many years that BVIS has now been in operation. Well done to you all for helping us to make our school such a special place to learn and work in and we all look forward to continuing building upon this into the future.
Over the holiday period, I would like you all to reflect upon 3 things:
Firstly, think about how you can engage more with our school community. This may be by arranging time to read the Highlights every Friday, talking to your children more regularly at home about their learning or looking at how you can help out/volunteer at forthcoming school events. Every minute of your time is appreciated by both us and your children.
Secondly, reflect upon what we do well at school and what we need to do to improve further. This can be achieved by completing the Parent Satisfaction Survey. Your views are important to us and they are always respected, appreciated and reflected upon.
If you haven’t already completed the survey, please take time over the holiday to do so:

Finally, take time to relax over the Christmas break and think about how you can share more quality time with your family. Ensure that you encourage all children, no matter what their age, to gain a balance between work, play and family life.
Thank you for taking time to read the Highlights and please continue to encourage others to do so too.

Students and staff were treated to some fantastic Christmas performances from KS3, KS4 and even our own special teacher band who performed ‘Last Christmas’. Well done to all performers and happy holidays from the Music department!
Secondary Sports Day
There is perhaps no better example of teamwork and team spirit than in BVIS Secondary Sports Day.
Our Secondary students took part in some competitive houses sports at RMIT University on Tuesday 10th December 2019. Students rallied behind their teammates to create an electric atmosphere, willing their companions to the finish line towards glory. Saigon were the overall champions of this competition.Congratulations to all of our students!
