Designing cities, building museums and formulating hypotheses...it's all in a day of learning for the Foundation 2 Owa Class.

“Look Ms. Dom…we built Jakarta!”

“I’m creating a bug museum.”

“I predict this is going to turn green if I mix it…”

These are just some of the many daily comments from the Foundation 2 Owas as they explore their learning environment at the Nord Anglia School Jakarta and engage in inquiry together.

the Foundation 2 Owa Class.

The Owas are in a child-led learning environment, meaning that they are directing their own learning, learning through inquiry and learning from and with each other. These children choose areas of interest to them and direct their time and energy there with their ever-observant teachers facilitating, guiding and deepening the learning opportunities when necessary.

At any moment throughout the day, you will find Owa students building with blocks, baking in an outdoor mud kitchen, designing water channels with pipes, authoring a book, experimenting with colours, visiting the Table of Curiosities, creating an imaginary small world, reading a story, or exploring the natural world with a magnifying glass. This is all in a day of learning at NAS Jakarta.

Child-led learning, often referred to as play-based learning, is inspired by the educational philosophy of Reggio Emilia. The guiding belief is that every child is a strong and capable individual who brings to school with them their own unique journey and stories thus far. Through communication, collaboration and exploration the children are able to share these stories and learn from and with each other, thereby deepening their experiences.

Whilst you won’t ever find the Owas sitting for a traditional Maths or English lesson, our approach to learning in no way holds children back on their educational journey. By learning through play and directing their own learning Owa students at NAS Jakarta are developing a deep understanding of who they are as a learner, who they learn with best and how they learn. They are becoming resilient, independence, resourceful, responsible and creative. Armed with these important learning dispositions, the Owas are laying the foundations that will pave the way for their next educational steps

As of today, NAS Jakarta Owa students want to be palaeontologists, scientists, detectives, fairies, engineers, unicorn trainers, garbage collectors and swimmers when they grow up. No matter the goal and no matter how many times it changes, these children are learning skills for success right now…together.

This short video provides an overview of our current Early Years Blended (Hybrid) Programme of Learning at the Nord Anglia School Jakarta.
