Secondary Curriculum

Secondary education at the British International School Hanoi consists of three distinct, consecutive phases. It delivers a middle and high school curriculum that is both stimulating and challenging, providing a broad and balanced education that is essential in preparing students for the future.

Secondary Book Week 1

Our secondary school phases are called Key Stages, as in the English National Curriculum, and are divided as follows:

  • Key Stage 3: Years 7, 8 & 9 (Grades 6-8)
  • Key Stage 4: Years 10 & 11 (Grades 9-10)
  • Key Stage 5: Years 12 & 13 (Grades 11-12)

Key Stage 3

The curriculum and teaching in Key Stage 3 at the British International School Hanoi reflects the fact that these are the first three years of Secondary school. All subjects are taught by specialist teachers and a more analytical approach to learning is expected.

Our curriculum at Key Stage 3 has roots in the British tradition of scholarly excellence. Upon on these foundations we have embedded international mindedness, in addition to other key 21st century skills, which we believe sets us apart and fully prepares students for the IB and future success.   Our aim is to inspire original and creative thinking in our students, whom we want to fully engage with their learning by being able to use the tools of enquiry and reflection.

The KS3 curriculum is built to offer our students a balanced and broad range of subjects from the opportunity to learn languages, deepen knowledge of the world, experience a vibrant sporting programme and expand their creativity through the arts. We also strongly believe that all students should have the chance of participating in opportunities that allow them to flourish and expand their potential. Therefore through Nord Anglia we are able to offer the unique offerings of Juilliard for our performing arts and MIT for our computing and technology strands.  A further key outcome of our curriculum is the development of caring,  global citizens through the expectation of service to our local community and the encouragement to allow all students to place this service within a global context.

Please see the document below for further information on the opportunities available within each subject:

Key Stage 4

During Key Stage 4, our Hanoi students are prepared for the external examinations they will sit towards the end of Year 11. The examination qualifications are awarded by the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). These challenging, externally assessed examinations are designed to cater for a wide range of abilities.

To make sure our students are well-prepared, we offer a broad, balanced curriculum that features a diverse selection of subjects including English, Maths, Science, ICT, History, Geography, Business Studies, Art & Design, Music, Drama and Physical Education. Personal, Social and Health Education also continues to be taught at this time.

Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form)

In August 2016, we began offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Successful completion of this course ensures that students are well prepared and suitably qualified to secure placement in the most competitive of universities, anywhere in the world.
