High School Humanities

Grade 8 Humanities

As we begin the new semester the 8th graders have just finished and exploration of world cultures through first looking at the cultures and geography of the historic Silk Road trade routes between Asia and Europe.  The students created diaries describing what a journey along the Silk Road could be like.  We then studied some of the ideas that where carried along the Silk Road when we learned about many of the major world religions, and the students created a research presentation about those religions.   We are now starting to explore Government and Politics.  We are starting by looking at the government of ancient Athens and looking at the influence of the Enlightenment on the modern government. We will study documents from the American, French and other revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries and think about what the purpose of government is by looking at several important thinkers on government from Aristotle to Jefferson.

Grade 9 Humanities

It has been a busy year so far for grade 9 Humanities.  We are on a journey through the World Wars of the 20th century.  We studied the changes in strategies of World War I, the impact of war on societies and how world leaders’ decisions can affect the whole world.   Students created their own war propaganda and newspaper articles.  Currently we are in the roaring 20’s to understand the changes in the interwar years.

Grade 10 Humanities

Following our study of the World Wars last year, grade 10 investigated the Cold War by researching three case studies: The Korean War, The Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.  Each group presented their findings in lessons to their peers.  They were responsible for the content, home learning and assessment.  Currently each student is practicing a speech given by a significant individual of the Cold War years.  We are looking forward to hearing the words of JFK, LBJ, Khrushchev, Churchill, Nixon, Malcom X, Maya Angelo, Reagan, Gloria Steinem, Coretta Scott King, MLK to name a few.

11th Grade DP History
The 11th grade history students are in the middle of studying the Great Depression in the US and Canada, one of their Higher level topics.  They have finished exploring Apartheid and US Civil Rights, their paper 1 topic, and have started work on their internal assessment, a detailed historical research investigation.

12th Grade DP History

The 12th graders are wrapping up their history work.  We are reviewing the Standard Level topics in preparation for the mock exams in March and the real exams in May.  With the Higher Level history students, we are wrapping up the Cold War in the Americas topic and only have the last higher level topic, the Great Depression left to finish.
