The Gift of Time: Why the best part of vacation is being together

The gift of time - The gift of time
Vacation creates something many families wish they had more of during the school year: time. This article explores why the most valuable moments of a break are often the simplest ones. From meaningful conversations and shared meals to modeling values and strengthening family relationships, discover how intentional time together supports children's emotional growth and reinforces the partnership between home and school.
Vacation offers a precious pause in the rhythm of our busy lives! A time that invites us to slow down, reconnect, and be intentional with how we spend our days as families.

Without the constant pressure of schedules, early mornings, and endless commitments, we are given the gift of time. The true value of this time, however, lies not in how much we do, but in how deeply we connect.

Using vacation time wisely means embracing moments that often get lost during the school year: sitting together at the table without rushing, engaging in meaningful conversations, and truly listening to our children. These are the moments when relationships are strengthened and trust is built. Children thrive when they feel heard, valued, and connected to the adults in their lives, and vacation provides the perfect opportunity to nurture this.

Beyond academic learning, a child’s development is deeply rooted in their social and emotional well-being. While schools play an important role in supporting this growth, they cannot, and should not, be expected to teach everything. The foundation of values, empathy, respect, and responsibility begins at home. It is in daily interactions, shared routines, and family traditions that children learn how to navigate the world with confidence and care.

Simple acts, sharing meals together, practicing good manners at the table, expressing gratitude, showing respect in conversation, are powerful lessons that shape a child’s character. These are not taught through worksheets or assessments, but through modeling, consistency, and presence. Vacation is an ideal time to reinforce these values, as it allows families to be more attentive, patient, and engaged.

In recent years, there has been a growing perception that because parents invest in their children's education, schools should carry the full responsibility for teaching and development. Education, however, has always been a shared partnership. Parents are, and will always be, a child's first and most influential teachers. Schools build upon that foundation by creating meaningful learning experiences, encouraging inquiry, and supporting children's academic, social, and emotional growth through programmes such as the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP).

Rather than viewing vacation as a break from responsibility, it can be seen as a return to what matters most: family, connection, and intentional parenting. It is a time to be fully present, to guide and support, and to nurture both the heart and the mind of each child. When families use this time thoughtfully, they create lasting memories and lay the foundation for confident and compassionate individuals.

In conclusion, using time wisely during vacation is not about doing more, it is about being more: more present, more connected, and more intentional in the moments that matter most. Have a wonderful vacation!
