What is the High School Diploma and why is it offered at NAIS Dublin?

As a parent, you may be looking for an education that prepares your child for a world of options – not a single predetermined path. For many families, that search for flexibility leads them to explore different secondary school pathways.

If you are new to international education, you might find yourself wondering: what exactly is the High School Diploma, and how does it compare to more familiar pathways like the Leaving Certificate or the IB Diploma Programme? Here is what you need to know.

What Is the High School Diploma?

The High School Diploma is a four-year senior secondary qualification, taken by students in Grades 9 to 12 (roughly ages 14 to 18). It is the standard university-entry qualification in the United States and is widely recognised by universities across North America, the UK, Europe and beyond.

Unlike the Leaving Certificate, which is largely determined by final exams taken over a short period, or the IB Diploma Programme, which has its own specific structure and assessment model, the High School Diploma is built around a flexible credit-based system. If your child follows this curriculum, they will earn credits across core and elective subjects over four years, demonstrating their abilities through a combination of coursework, projects and assessments.

How Does the High School Diploma Work at NAIS Dublin?

The High School Diploma is a flexible and engaging four-year programme that prepares students for university, careers and global citizenship. This programme enables your child to build well-rounded academic foundations while developing their strengths and passions.

If your child chooses the High School Diploma, they will study a curriculum of core academic subjects, including English, Mathematics, Sciences and Humanities, and personalised electives chosen in the areas that interest them most. Real-world learning experiences are integrated throughout, helping your child graduate not just with knowledge, but with the skills and confidence to apply it.

Who Is the High School Diploma For?

The High School Diploma may be an excellent fit for your child if they:

Want flexibility in how they are assessed.
If your child is a consistent hard worker who thrives better with regular assessment rather than with the pressure of terminal exams, the credit-based model can allow them to better show their true potential.

Have clear passions or talents.
Whether your child loves science, the arts, technology or the humanities, the elective structure of the High School Diploma allows for deeper exploration of specific subject areas alongside a strong academic core.

Aim for North American universities.
If your child's ambitions include universities in the United States or Canada, the High School Diploma is the most familiar and recognised qualification for those application processes.

How Does the High School Diploma Compare to the IB Diploma?

Both qualifications are offered at NAIS Dublin, and both are internationally recognised pathways to excellent universities. The choice between them comes down to your child’s individual needs and preferences.

The IB Diploma Programme is a highly regarded, academically demanding two-year programme (taken in the final two years of school) that requires students to study six subjects across specific groups, complete an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge course, and a programme of Creativity, Activity, and Service. It is well suited to students who thrive with breadth, intellectual challenge and a structured global framework.

The High School Diploma, by contrast, spans four years and offers more flexibility in subject selection. It is better suited to students who want to specialise earlier, who prefer continuous assessment over terminal exams, or who have a specific North American university pathway in mind.

If you are unsure of which pathway is the best fit for your child, our team can provide additional information on what to consider when making your decision.
