KEY STAGE 1 CURRICULUM

Following the English National Curriculum, Key Stage 1 in our Primary School spans Years 1 and 2. During Year 1, we build upon children’s previous learning in the six areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.

We then teach the children key areas like guided reading, phonics, and mental maths, and we place strong emphasis on core skills in numeracy and literacy. Our teachers allow each child to work through fundamental building blocks.

We group subjects such as science; history; geography; art; design; technology; personal, social, health and citizenship education (PSHCE); information and communication technologies (ICT); music and physical education (PE) into topics. Our teachers plan themes that reflect the interests of the children in each class, and they create a balance between creative and physical activities.

Learning outside of the classroom is an important part of our children’s growth, and we support and enhance this through trips, visits, whole-school events, themed days, extracurricular activities, and creative productions.

KEY STAGE 1 LEARNING

We plan our primary school curriculum carefully with long, medium, and short-term goals for our students. Our teachers adopt a creative and practical approach, which builds our students' natural curiosity and fosters a desire to learn, think, and take appropriate risks.

We also recognise the role of technology in the current and future lives of our students, so we create meaningful opportunities for them to learn, explore, and use modern technology across the curriculum.

Through our lessons and activities, we begin to build the social confidence, self-reliance, and self-discipline of each child that will help them form positive relationships with other students and adults. Our Key Stage 1 students will also begin to be more globally aware and will start to understand what it means to be part of a community.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

We encourage all children to achieve at a high level and carefully plan learning and development around their individual needs and interests, using modern assessment methods to ensure their continuous growth and progress. These include 'Assessment for Learning' (AFL) techniques, such as self- and peer-assessment as well as sharing the success criteria, ensure each child knows how to progress.

The high standards our Key Stage 1 students achieve prepare them for the best possible transfer into Key Stage 2, as highly engaged and self-motivated learners.
