MAKING FRIENDS

Making new friends in Hong Kong is relatively simple. Hong Kong is home to a significant expatriate community with people of all nationalities. Some nations have their own established social circles that you can easily become part of. However building a network of new international friends can be a rewarding experience so it’s worth casting a wider net.

For many families, the school can become the heart of their social life, bringing their children into contact with new friends, but also the parents too. At Nord Anglia International School Hong Kong, we will work closely with the parents of our students to encourage social activities with and for them through our buddy system. For more information, please contact our Admissions team.

Pursuing sporting or cultural activities can also bring you into contact with new friends with common interests and you’ll find a range of clubs that you can join to explore such interests.

FINDING WORK

Spouses relocating to Hong Kong with their husband/wives job automatically have the right to work if they wish. However, it is not uncommon for spouses not to work.

If you do wish to find employment, then you may find yourself competing for roles with bilingual locals, and this may put you at a disadvantage. Jobs requiring high levels of English (or your own other native language) can be found though with a little patience and perseverance.

For some people, moving to another country provides an opportunity for a career change and to try something completely new. It’s not uncommon to find expatriates who have set up their own businesses or work on a freelance basis here.

Visits from family and friends

The best time of year for family and friends to visit is during the autumn months – particularly October and November – when the weather is mild and comfortable, and typhoon season has ended.

There is plenty for visitors to do and since Hong Kong is so easy for tourists to explore, they will easily be able to keep themselves busy if you can’t play host to them the whole time.
