NAIS Pudong Scholarships
As part of our Social Impact programme, students recently took part in a hands-on learning experience at Urban Bees Shanghai, where they immersed themselves in the fascinating and complex world of honeybees. Through guided exploration of active hives, students gained first-hand insight into the bee life cycle, the distinct roles of the queen, drones, and worker bees, and the collective intelligence that drives the hive’s survival.
The experience highlighted the symbiotic relationship between bees and flowering plants, as students observed how nectar is exchanged for pollination, sustaining both the colony and the ecosystems that depend on them. They explored how bees craft intricate hives using their own wax, preserve honey, and seal their structures using tree sap (propolis) to protect the next generation of eggs, larvae, and pupae within.
Beyond the science, the trip called for resilience and calm as students donned protective gear and bravely engaged in real hive inspections. Their confidence in handling the bees and the respect they showed for the beekeepers’ work reflected a deepening awareness of the fragile balance between human activity and ecological health.
Importantly, the visit was also a platform for social consciousness and global citizenship. Students considered the broader implications of bee populations in decline, and how that connects to food security, biodiversity, and climate action, themes that directly link to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 12, 13, and 15). Experiences like this aim not only to educate but to empower our students to think critically, act compassionately, and be inspired to lead change—whether that’s through environmental action, advocacy, or supporting sustainable initiatives in their own communities.
At the same time, Urban Bees Shanghai is launching a government-supported urban ecology project to promote more sustainable practices. We sincerely invite parents and community members to:
Scan the QR code to follow the official WeChat account and support a green commitment
Purchase high-quality honey and books through their mini store, and your support will directly help local beekeepers.
You are welcome to forward it to more friends and help environmental protection and agriculture together!
Last week, NAIS Pudong Primary School hosted a fascinating "Vintage Artifacts Show & Tell" lecture for Year 5 and Year 6 students, aiming to deepen their appreciation for Chinese cultural heritage.
