Big Idea: Beliefs and customs from the past have a powerful effect on our lives today

Even a little rain couldn’t hold us back from a trip to UNESCO World Heritage Site Kinderdijk! Grade 7 students enjoyed a trip out of the classroom, only 30 minutes south of school, to explore the over 700 year history of Dutch water management. Students began with an introductory video explaining the history of Kinderdijk and the many disputed stories of how Kinderdijk got its name! Then, students went on a tour through the “grachten” (canals) of Kinderdijk to view the 19 “windmolen” (windmills) along the region, including 2 museums explaining how the Dutch inhabited and worked the mills.

Student Highlights

“It was cool to think about the traditions that the Dutch had a long time ago, and how they have continued all of these years. Not only that, but they have improved their traditions, so that they are now very well known for these traditions.” --- Meredith

“The trip was very fun. It was interesting to see the windmills from the inside.” --- Felix
