Whether you’re moving to Dubai from overseas or just changing schools locally, here are some practical tips to help your child feel at home from day one.

Before the First Day

Start the Conversation Early

Change can be unsettling for children, especially when it involves leaving behind familiar faces and places. Begin talking about the move as early as possible in an open and positive way. Share what they can look forward to, from meeting new friends representing over 80 nationalities, to exploring our world-class campus. It’s also important to validate any worries they

might have and reassure them that it's completely normal to feel a bit nervous.

Get to Know Us Ahead of Time

We strongly encourage all new families to visit the campus before the first day. Touring the school, meeting their teacher, and seeing the classroom environment can help children feel more comfortable and reduce any anxiety.

For our Early Years families, we offer ‘Stay and Play’ sessions, a chance for young learners to explore the classroom with their parents and meet key members of the team in a relaxed setting.

Celebrate the Journey

Leaving friends and teachers behind is emotional, so make space for a proper goodbye. Help your child process the change by creating a memory box or scrapbook filled with photos, drawings, or messages from friends. It’s a great way to celebrate where they’ve come from, while building excitement for what’s next.

Practice the School Route

Doing a trial run of the morning routine, whether that’s walking, driving, or taking the NAS Dubai school bus, can help take the mystery out of the first day. Knowing the route, where to go, and what to expect builds confidence (for both parents and students).

Once Term Begins

Be There on Day One

If you can, walk your child into school and help them find their way to class. Our friendly staff and student leaders are always nearby to lend a hand (and a smile).

Encourage Connection

Relationships and belonging are at the heart of our school culture. Encourage your child to get involved in extracurricular activities, whether that’s joining a sports team, signing up for one of our many ECAs, or trying

out the performing arts. These are great ways to build confidence, explore interests, and make friends outside of the classroom.

Lean on the Community

Our NAS Dubai community is a strong and welcoming one. New families are invited to regular coffee mornings, House events, and school socials, providing the chance to connect with other parents and feel part of school life. Many families tell us it’s these events that helped them feel settled the fastest.

Give it Time

Every child adapts at their own pace. Some may run through the school gates with a smile, while others may take a little longer to find their rhythm, and that’s okay. Our teaching staff and dedicated wellbeing team work closely with families to ensure every child feels supported emotionally, socially, and academically throughout their transition.

From Public to Private School? Here’s What to Expect

If your child is transitioning from a public school to a private international environment, they might notice differences in routine, curriculum, and expectations. At NAS Dubai, our smaller class sizes mean more personalised attention, while our global learning approach ensures a smooth academic transition no matter your child’s background.

We also prioritise global citizenship, creativity, and innovation, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in a fast-changing world. Our approach ensures a smooth academic and cultural transition, no matter your child’s previous experience.
