Help Us to Help Nepal in Secondary

13 mei 2015

The worst quake to hit the Himalayan nation in nearly a century. Year 7 student Natarsha Yan tells us why it is so important that we help Nepal after this disaster and what students in the secondary school will be doing to raise funds and awareness.

On the 25 April, the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal, since the 1934 Nepal-Bihar earthquake, shook the world, as thousands were killed and many more injured in a massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the rector scale; destroying entire towns and reducing ancient monuments to rubble in just a matter of seconds.

In just that matter of seconds and the following aftershocks and then another major quake measuring 7.3 just this week, more and more people’s lives were destroyed. Nepal and its people - some of the poorest in the world need help now. And we can and must help them, however we can.

As a school, BISS Puxi is organizing the following events to help.

Firstly, we are having a ‘Raising Awareness’ week this week. Many people are still unaware of just how bad and desperate the situation in Nepal currently is and without that information and understanding, people may not feel compelled to help. The crisis in Nepal is a global matter; we need to know its enormity to provide the appropriate response. In Geography classes, students are studying further the true impact this earthquake has had on Nepal and its people and how they can help.

Next week will be the ‘Fundraising’ week. There will be a range of different activities throughout the week such as building a ‘Coin Mountain’ on Tuesday where we will aim to build a giant mountain made of coins to represent the Himalayas – please bring your coins in to help us build a BIG mountain! We sincerely hope that everyone will participate and give generously during these activities:

  • Monday 18 May: Request a song, donate money to dedicate a song to a friend. Enjoy sunshine and music in the Quad
  • Tuesday 19 May: Coin Mountain, bring some coins and help produce a coin mountian in support of Nepal
  • Wednesday 20 May: ‘Support Nepal’ wrist band and badge sale
  • Thursday 21 May: Nepal themed cake sale
  • Friday 22 May: Tutor group fundraising day

I, together with my family, am doing my share to help and am joining the group organising the events. I am helping because I believe in this cause. I believe strongly that we, privileged as we are, should be the first to step up to help the poor and those in desperate situations as a result of natural disasters. We can’t always rely on someone else to do it. We need to take action. And this is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our leadership and humanity.

People are dying in Nepal and even more are living without the basics of normal life. A few coins and a few hours of your time can save a life. Make a difference, do the right thing. Come and help.
