Last week, we were once again honoured to host a visit from Andrea Lee, our visiting teaching artist from The Juilliard School.

Andrea spent 3 days at BISS Puxi, working collaboratively with staff and students to further develop our Juilliard-Nord Anglia Performing Arts Programme.

During her visit, Andrea worked with Year 4 to unpick some of Bach’s melodies in his Cello Suite, No.3, Year 7 were experimenting with incantations and accompaniments as part of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Year 2 also had the opportunity to experiment with intervals and melodic shape whilst Year 6 were using their flute skills to develop their improvising skills.

Andrea also shared her knowledge and experience of designing our online resources with 2 classes, and demonstrated activities involving Chinese notation and extracts from Ambush from 10 Sides, from the core category Music for Ancient Instruments with Year 7, as well as playing some Year 1 student snippets of Ligeti’s 6 Bagatelles for Woodwind Quintet, from the core category Music for Small Ensembles.

It was not only the students who benefitted from this visit as the whole music team had a chance to engage with some professional development and explored different ways of using composition as a vehicle to develop other key skills in our music curriculum.

A true highlight of the week was our first String Showcase, where our string students from Year 1 – 13 performed in a variety of ensembles alongside Andrea. For a full review of this event please see Ms Meehan’s blog post here.

We look forward to welcoming Andrea back for her final visit this year at the end of May.
