Our first profiled alumni is Leon Lai who attended BISS Puxi from 2009 to 2015.
Name: Leon Lai
1) Where are you presently working/studying?
I am currently studying at the Les Roches International School of Hotel Management in Switzerland.
2) How has your BISS Puxi education helped you to date?
Overall, BISS Puxi has helped me to be organized, communicate better with teachers and different students, to take risks, learn from mistakes and most importantly asking questions when I don’t get a concept.
3) What did you enjoy most about BISS Puxi?
What I really enjoyed over the years at BISS Puxi was the diversity of students from all over the world and the opportunity to learn more about different cultures. The most enjoyable part of BISS Puxi was the Art department. Ever since I was in Year 7 all the way to Year 13, I fell in love with BISS Puxi’s Art classes. Walking into the Art classes has broadened my creative mind and let out all of the stress I had with the other subjects. Art classes has allowed me to be free, expressive, detailed, organized, relax and lastly to get in a closer student to teacher relationship. Lastly, I really enjoyed the ECA’s and events offered at BISS Puxi, it really helped me to balance my school and personal life.
4) Do you still keep in touch with your old classmates at BISS Puxi?
With the technology we have today, communicating and meeting with old classmates from BISS Puxi isn’t a problem at all. Whether it is with Facebook, Twitter, Wechat or Whatsapp, I always keep in touch with my friends and teachers.
5) What was the inspiration behind your choice of university and course?
Ever since I was at a very young age, I always liked to help others, volunteer and serve my friends and families drinks when they come over to my house. I also loved to help with school drama productions and events that I could be involved to show my dedication and hospitality. These were the main inspirations behind my choice of choosing to study at one of the top hospitality universities in the world.
6) What three pieces of advice would you give to students who are currently studying IB as they approach revision and exam time?
The three advices that I would give is 1. Create a revision time table and STICK to it. 2. Complete all the necessary homework the day it is given. 3. Be organized, on time and punctual to all commitments. All these three pieces of advice is important for university and college.
7) What were the main challenges you faced studying IB?
My three main challenges I faced during IB were; time management, balancing school and social life and lastly being motivated to finish my work.
8) How did your CAS experiences aid your learning?
CAS has really helped me to build up and shape who I really am. With the creative instinct I possess, this helped me to start up an Equestrian team for my university. For action, taking part in different activities which occurred on campus. Lastly, service is a main part that has aided my learning especially when I’m studying at a hospitality school. Service is always in hospitality, without superb service than it would be really hard for one to work in a hotel.
