Mandarin Clothing Project

This week, Mr Lancaster awarded Commendations to a number of Year 7 students who, as part of their Mandarin studies, designed and had made an outfit at the local tailors.

Clothing

They used Chinese to describe their design, negotiate on price and then to present the reason and inspiration for their design to some Chinese teachers invited from a local Chinese school. AT BISS, we believe in the students using their imagination and their language skills in everyday life.

My Hongqiao blog

As soon as we set foot in the building, I was really nervous about ordering the wrong thing, not getting it to a lower price and saying some things incorrectly that changes the meaning without meaning to. But as I watched Sophie doing it first, I prepared for some vocabulary that we hadn’t practised and some key words that we have practised. After I felt pretty confident after preparing for the final time. And then it was my turn. I headed to the small area where I could buy my clothes and ordered my white and black woolly jumper. At first, she asked me basic things that I could understand: what I want, what style, what colours and what price I wanted, which she then raised to make me bargain!  I ultimately asked for a white, grey and black striped jumper. For that, I offered 200 yuan (including deposit0. She said that was too low but after some back and forward bargaining, I agreed to a price of 190 yuan and that’s really cheap for a jumper! After the bargaining, she has me for specifications like if I wanted it loose or tight, large or small, the collar tall or a bit lower and if the jumper should go a bit lower at the bottom. At the end, I got every-thing I wanted for a custom-made jumper for an especially low price. It went pretty well. I think it looks great and I’m looking forward to wearing it during the upcoming cold winter season at home.

clothing

I went to the Hongqiao pearl market with my friend and ordered a black 'n' white, long sleeved, cotton shirt. I enjoyed the trip, and enjoyed speaking Chinese to the tailor. I found some words difficult to remember, but I easily replaced them with a suitable alternative. I really liked how I could order something in Chinese, it was absolutely great. My partner, Sophie, also ordered the same design shirt as I did, so we could practise together more efficiently. Overall, I found this clothing project really fun, as I learnt a lot of new words and phrases.

Thomas, Year 7

Once I arrived at the tailors, I was nervous but seeing other people doing it gave me more confidence and the starting price was 800rmb and I lowered it to 450rmb. I was so happy and excited. I can’t wait to go get my tailcoat. The tailors were very generous and gave a very low price. This was a great experience and I am so thankful we were gifted this chance to make our own clothing.
