  • Whatever Next!

Learning Theme – Whatever Next!

Continuing with our Teddy Bear theme, this week our stimulus will be the book by Jill Murphy called “Whatever Next!”. We will have a range of activities in the classroom based around the adventures of Baby Bear and his journey to the moon.

We will continue to read a range of bear related stories throughout the week, with “Whatever Next!” being our main story focus.

Whatever Next! tells us the magical story about Baby Bear and his adventure to the moon. Just before bath time one evening, Baby Bear gazes at the moon and decides that he would like to go there, just as Mrs Bear is calling him for a bath. Baby Bear finds a rocket, a space helmet and some space boots and sets out on his journey. On his way, Baby Bear makes friends with an owl and an airplane full of passengers who wave at him. Baby Bear and the owl enjoy a picnic on the moon then set off back for Baby Bear’s bath. Baby Bear made the long journey home, through the rain, and then tells Mrs Bear all about his adventures but she doesn't quite believe him.

We will talk to the children about Baby Bear’s journey. Who does he meet on the way?. What does he take with him? What do they do when they get to the moon? What happened when he got home?

Understanding the World

Baby Bear needed a rocket to get to the moon? What did he use to make his rocket? Can we make our own rocket? We will challenge the children to create their own rockets using a range of materials. They may use the big blocks to build a rocket or spaceship; perhaps the junk modelling materials could be used, or a giant cardboard box, just like Baby Bear used. We can’t wait to see what ideas and suggestions the children  come up with!

A Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

Baby Bear enjoyed a picnic on the moon, so we will practice making picnic sandwiches during our cooking session.  During the week we will find out all about picnics, what do you need for a picnic (a picnic mat, finger foods, lots of games, sunshine…) and later in the week, instead of having our usual school dinner, we will pack a picnic and eat it in the school grounds. We will  bring our teddy bears with us so that they can enjoy the picnic too. Yum Yum!

Expressive Arts and Design

As well as designing and creating model rockets, we will be using paint and collage to depict Baby Bear and his journey to the moon. We will use a range of printing techniques to decorate a picnic mat for Baby Bear and his friends, and we will listen to the song “If you go down to the woods today….” Which is all about the Teddy Bears having their picnic. Please click here to hear the song.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Many thanks again.
