Week Beginning 16 October 2017


  • Tanzania Day - In November, Y9 and 10 pupils will return to Tanzania to continue with helping the Kitefu Primary School with funds to improve the conditions of their school. You can help us raise money for them by dressing up in non-uniform for Tanzania Day next Friday 20th October and donating 20RMB each. You can dress in the Tanzania flag colours, something linked with safari or just be creative! Thank you for your help.
  • Thank you to so many of you who have ensured your child’s belongings are clearly named. Please can you check that all water bottles and snack boxes are named every day.
  • Swimming lessons : remember to send swimming costume, towel, goggles and swim hat each Friday.
  • Please remember we are a nut free school, this means you may not send any nut products at all to school at any time, this includes Nutella, snack bars that contain nuts, nut butters, nut oils or nuts.
  • In Nursery, we are trying to promote the children’s independence. Please can you help at home by asking your child to put on their own socks and shoes.
  • We are looking for parents who are able to volunteer their time to help with our Early Years Library. This would include keeping the books in order, scanning books in and out, reading to children, demonstrating book care and making the book area looking inviting.   • Giving Tree - 

    Each year, Giving Tree aims to provide children in need with a gift bag full of winter clothes and school supplies. The hope is that these children will one day pay it forward
    and give to others. A programme of the Community Center Shanghai, it keeps the children’s preferences in mind with individualised bags and gives our students the opportunity
    to hand deliver bags to the children who will benefit from them.

    Key information:
    •    This year the Giving Tree bags will be pre-filled, which will cost RMB185 and you are required to purchase a toy and an educational book for approximately RMB70.
    •    Alternatively, families can donate RMB250 for all items to be brought on their behalf.
    •    If you would like to participate, please sign-up by visiting the link below by Friday 27 October 2017.

The children are showing a great interest in our dinosaur theme and some children can name some of the dinosaurs. We will continue to explore this further and will learn more about dinosaurs by reading stories, singing songs and playing with dinosaur toys. The children will make their own dinosaur using their own chosen materials and we will combine all of the children’s work to produce a dinosaur display. The children will also have the opportunity to become an archaeologist and dig for dinosaur bones as well as make their own dinosaur models using playdough.

We will also be sending home our class mascots. Every Friday the mascot will be sent home with a different child. Your job is to help support your child to complete a page in the book with some photos or drawings of what the mascot has done over the weekend with your family. Your child will then share this with the class on Monday during group time.

In Mandarin, the children will make dinosaur footprints and work on vocabulary related to size. The children will also listen to some dinosaur stories in Mandarin.

Following the pupils’ interests in Transport, the children have been introduced to different forms of transportation. Lots of them shared information about their own experiencences of travel during the holidays or at weekends. The role play area continues to be popular with children excited to play at being engineers, train drivers and racing car drivers. We have used the story ‘The Journey Home from Granpa’s’ by Jemima Lumley to prompt discussion about ways that we can travel and children have enjoyed joining in with the song version that can be found in the link below.

As we continue this theme of learning, children will be given the opportunity to use junk modelling materials to build and create their own choice of transport, making cars, boats, planes etc. Making links with their Mandarin learning, we will encourage chidren to use vocabulary such as join, repair, build etc. We continue to encourage children to recognise the digits of numbers 1-10 and will promote this through games, using the indoor and outside spaces. Parents can support this by drawing their childs attention to numbers in the environment around them, bus numbers, Metro lines, car registration plates, phone numbers etc.

Minkey the Meerkat will be going on his second home stay this weekend . He had a great time at William’s. Please remember that you can scribe what he gets up to in English or Chinese.

Jack and the Beanstalk  is inspiring alot of the learning. The children have been cutting out and counting leaves for a beanstalk for Jack to climb up. We have been  using the children’s strong interest in the story to introduce new words and sentences.  We have a giant in the class room. The children have been asking him what he would like to eat and feeding him. This has given the children food vocabulary. Some of the children have been drawing illustrations to do with the story and  have been excited to write letters to each other after the giant wrote a letter to Jack.

We have been talking a lot about this story at group times and will continue to ask questions that encourage the children to think creatively and imaginatively. This week we will find out what the Giant would like to eat. We will also think about what it is like to live in a castle in the sky. At group time we will write a letter to the Gaint with some of our questions.

 I have been  delighted with how much the children are linking there thinking to prvevious stories we have read in the class. These include “The Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carl and “Mr BIG” by Ed  Verve. We will be making our own class book which all of the children will contribute to. We will draw upon or knowledge of these stories to write our own book.

This week interactive props to the poem of ‘Five Little Monkeys’ are avaliable in the book corner. This will support the children in  learning about rhyme and alliteration.


Jack and the Beanstalk



Children are really enjoying building or fixing and  repairing things. So we will continue our transportation theme and extend to mechanics. They can make their own transportation modelings and learn to say some new mechanical words and put them into the full sentenses during the activity.

Deze week griezelen we verder met ‘ Dit is een boek vol monsters’ van Guido van Genechten.  Wie erbij was op het Griezelfeest weet hier alvast meer over!  We creëren met plasticine de engste monsters en verzinnen een gepaste naam voor onze monsters.  Welke geluid maakt jouw monster?  Hoeveel ogen  en poten heeft jouw monster? 

De kinderen ontwerpen een waarschuwingsbord voor hun monster en beschermen ons met anti-monstermaterialen om de monsters uit het boek aan te pakken.  Opgepast!
