Week Beginning 1 May 2017

Please note that school will start on Tuesday 2 May this week due to the National Holiday.


  • Healthy Snacks - Please ensure that your child’s daily snack is a healthy one
  • Warm Weather - Now the weather is getting warmer, please could you encourage your child to bring in a hat and also a water bottle so that they remain well hydrated during the day.
  • School Library - Our school librarians are in school until 4:30pm on a Monday and Tuesday.  If, as parents, you would like to borrow books you can set up afamily account.


This week, the children will continue to learn about non-fiction texts with a focus on instructions. The children will learn how to follow and give instructions. They will also learn the features of an instruction text and use these to write instructions for how to plant a seed.

This is the first of two weeks on Data Handling. We will learn basic data concepts such as sorting information into different groups. We will also teach the ability to read simple picture graphs and bar graphs. This will be developed further as the children construct their own graphs and also begin to draw conclusions from different graphs.

This week we will begin to focus on reading, witing and using the phase 3 HFWs. We will practise building sentences using HFWs and continue to practise applying our skills using phase 3 sounds. 


This week we will begin a series of weeks on ‘alternative pronunciation’. There are a number of English letters that have different sounds within different words. Our starting examples will be vowel sounds; a, e, i, o and u. An example of alternative pronunciation would be the i sound in tin and find.

Puffer Fish

This week the Puffer Fish phonics group will be continuing to revise all of the sounds and tricky words in Phase 2. We will also focus on the tricky words- no, go, to, him, up.



This week Starfish will be learning alternative spellings for u and ear. They will learn that  ‘u’ can be spelt as ‘o’ and ‘ear’ as ‘ere’ and ‘eer’. The children will practise reading and spelling polysyllabic words with these spellings such as: nothing, worrying, mother, severe, here, interfere, steering, veered.


This week Stingrays will be beginning phase 4. During this phase we will be using our knowledge of all of the 44 graphemes from phase 2 and 3 to read CVC word. We will be extending CVC words to CVCC such as bent, tent, damp and pant. We will also learning to read and spell the tricky words said and so.


This week the Jelly Fish group will learn to apply the sounds wh, ph an ew. They will be blending them together with other sounds when reading and spelling words i.e. when, which, whom, phonics, Philip, blew and crew. They will also be learning how to read and spell the tricky words Mr, Mrs, don’t,  by, some and come.


This week during our Themed Learning lessons, we will be focusing on Digital Literacy. Children will be learning how to use the different features on the camera on the ipad. They will take photos of a variety of different plants. They will then practise adding text to their image.

This week we will be focusing on friendships and helping our friends to be happy. We will play a variety of different team building games and will practise sharing and taking turns.

Over the coming weeks the children will focus on developing Microsoft Office skills; specifically with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint. The children will develop typing skills and key skills in finding and using; text boxes, bold text, italics, changing fonts and font colours. All of which will be developed under our topic theme of Plants and Insects.
