This week in literacy we are looking at biographies. The children will be looking at the features of this type of text, practising their note taking and skim reading skills as well as their research skills, using both books and safe internet searching. We will be focussing our research on Howard Carter, the famous archaeologist who discovered the tomb of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh; Tutankhamun.

This week, Year 3 will be learning about time.  They will start out comparing the duration of events and learning time relationships i.e. 1 minute = 60 seconds, 12 months = 1 year. They will also be learning to estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute; recording and comparing time in terms of seconds, minutes, hours and o’clock. To ensure that your child is prepared for their upcoming lessons, it would help greatly if they could recap on the following: telling the time on the hour, half past the hour, quarter to and quarter past the hour; the to/past sides of the clock face; how many seconds there are in a minute; how many minutes there are in an hour; how many hours there are in a day; how many days there are in a year.  They will also be applying their addition/subtraction skills to solve time-related questions.

A World Wonder – Egypt. Children will continue their study of Ancient Egyptian society and the social scale. Having gained an understanding of the role of the Pharaoh and other social classes within Ancient Egyptian society, the children will this week undertake the design and technology project to create a 2D social scale information pyramid. After designing and constructing the pyramid, the children will use their knowledge to add drawings and information to the structure to explain the different social classes.

Ancient, Egyptian, society, social scale, role, Pharaoh, priest, officials, scribe, merchant, craftsman, peasant, slave.

Continuing the theme of internet safety, the children will first review the safe searching video on Espresso Primary. Given the topic of the Ancient Egyptians, the children will then put their safe searching knowledge into practice while conducting research into their chosen area.
