    Andrew has worked at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi since 2013 and has led the school as Principal since 2019. Previously, as Head of Secondary, Andrew oversaw a sustained increase in the school’s academic results for IGCSE and IBDP students, ensuring outstanding academic results that have enabled two thirds of our BISS Puxi students to reach the world's top 100 universities in the last year.

    Andrew was born in Middlesbrough in the North East of England which is where he grew up before attending Keele University to take a degree in Philosophy and Politics. This was followed by a PGCE programme in Mathematics, teaching at the University of Nottingham. His first teaching job was volunteer work with VSO in Papua New Guinea, working in a high school in a very rural environment. Andrew then spent a year working in London before going overseas again to work at the British School of Lomé in Togo, West Africa – initially as a Mathematics teacher, then Head of Mathematics, followed by IB Diploma Coordinator. After ten years in Togo, he came to China to the first time to work at BISS – initially as Head of Mathematics before becoming Head of the IB Academy. After six years at BISS, Andrew returned to Africa for two years as Head of Secondary at the newly established École Ruban Vert in Libreville, Gabon. This was followed by a return to BISS for another two years as Head of the IB Academy before moving across the river to NAIS Pudong as Head of Secondary where he spent another two years before working at Changsha WES Academy as Assistant Principal.

    Lisa studied German with International Studies at Warwick University from 1991-1995. She then took a year out and completed her CTEFLA certificate for EAL and taught children in EAL schools in Oxfordshire. She then found herself working in retail management for two years, but felt that her heart lay in teaching and so returned to Warwick to complete her PGCE.

    Thomas Hitchings

    Thomas has been at BISS Puxi since 2010 and is the founding manager of the BISCAP programme. He has had many roles in his eighteen years of teaching which started in Manchester as a school Sports Coordinator. It was for his excellent results in this role that he won the prestigious ‘Innovations in Sport’ award for raising attendance at extracurricular activities in deprived parts of the city.

    Growing up in Birmingham as the youngest daughter of Dr Martin Hadlington, a Chemistry teacher and Lay Reader, and Mrs Carol Hadlington, a nurse, Elizabeth developed an interest in education and a passion for understanding other cultures and religions from an early age. Her leadership skills were evident even then as Head Chorister and as a Warrant Officer in the Girls’ Brigade.

Having started his career in Cheshire, England, he held responsibilities of Head of Department, Head of House and Head of Year. The skills he acquired enabled him to obtain leadership positions at other schools.

    Having completed both his BA and MA in Theology and Religious Studies at The University of Leeds, York St. John, Richard worked for The Royal Household, and The College of St. George, Windsor Castle, for seven years. Following on from this exciting chapter, he chose to pursue his long-held ambition to teach, and completed his PGCE in Birmingham in 2013, where he subsequently went on to teach in a culturally diverse inner-city school. Teaching across Key Stage 2, he took on various leadership roles including: English and Reading Lead, EYFS – Year 6; Upper Key Stage 2 Phase Leader; and Teach First and PGCE mentor.  Moving on from this much-cherished school community, Richard embarked upon his first international post, joining BISS in 2017 as a Year 3 classroom teacher. Keen to contribute to our BISS community further, Richard took on the roles of Year Leader and English Lead for Primary before joining the Primary Senior Leadership Team as Assistant Head of Primary in 2019 and, latterly, as Deputy Head of Primary in 2021.

    Dafydd has been a classroom teacher for fourteen years, since qualifying from the University of Gloucestershire with a BEd Degree in Primary Education. He started teaching a Year 6 class in Gloucester and then moved to Birmingham to teach Year 3. After a time teaching in Uganda, he moved to Bristol to teach a Reception and then Year 1 class. Along with his family, he then decided to move to Egypt and taught a Year 1 and 2 class for three years. Dafydd joined BISS in 2018, as the Year 2 Year Leader. He recently completed his NPQSL in senior leadership and is now Head of Early Years and Assistant Head of Primary.
