One of the most exciting outcomes from our collaboration with The Juilliard School is the visits we host from professional artists. Last week we were privileged to welcome two artists to school at the same time. Ingrid Kapteyn, is an international performer, collaborator and teacher, with a BFA in Dance from The Juilliard School. She recently spent seven months performing seven roles in the original cast of Punchdrunk’s ‘Sleep No More Shanghai’. Jessica Meyer returned to school for the third time this year. She is one of the amazing Juilliard team who are populating the Juilliard Creative Classroom with fabulous specialist resources for our staff and students to work with. We have made a start with this already and many of our students have interacted with videos of Juilliard Alumni performing Music especially for our students.
Jessica spent time observing Ms. Laura Opperman teaching and gave feedback on her use of the Juilliard Creative Classroom. This series of works and resources are excellent additions to our curriculum and the music department is working hard to embed them into lessons effectively. During observations, Jessica spent time showing the students how to improve listening skills and how to identify instruments in the orchestra.
Our Year 5, 6, 7 and 8 students were inspired and challenged by Ingrid during 90 minute movement workshops. Ingrid used the stimuli of statues and movies to create three short dance phrases with the three different groups. Each had a different topic; Sandstorm, Bulldog and Bullying. Students responded so positively to this new experience and left asking when they could do it again. This is very encouraging as we look forward to welcoming a new dance teacher to the PE Department and begin to design the curriculum to accommodate the Juilliard Dance Curriculum next year.
At the end of the school day, Primary School students, teachers, parents and guest from CIS Doha were treated to an extra special assembly. Jessica and Ingrid joined together to demonstrate the power of collaboration. Jessica played original work composed by herself while Ingrid responded with movement. Our students also performed their short phrases created during workshops earlier in the day.
The students always get a lot from these visits through finding out even more about our core works, listening to a professional violist and having the opportunity to take part in some really engaging workshops.
Another thank you to Jessica and Ingrid and we hope to see you next year! Together with Juilliard we unlock students' creativity and self-expression.
