Staff Profiles: Ms Emma

Emma Mulligan

Year 1 Year Leader and Year 1 Teacher

I began my career working with children over 20 years ago by first qualifying as an NNEB Nursery Nurse. I worked in Dubai and then Scotland for many years before moving to Thailand for 2 years. I then decided I wanted to increase my knowledge, and so I went to the University of Liverpool where I gained a degree (First-Class Hons) in Early Childhood Studies. I then trained as a teacher via the Graduate Teaching Program and taught Reception and KS1 children for a few years. By this point, I had met my husband and we were both keen to travel and experience different cultures. We moved to Vietnam, where I taught Kindergarten for two years before finally settling here in Bangkok in 2010.

I was attracted to St Andrews International School Bangkok because of its inclusive policies and the friendly feeling when visiting the campus. Shortly after starting I became the ICT coordinator which was a challenging and rewarding job. Then, as the Reception year group grew bigger, I left that role to become the Year Group Leader. After 7 years in Reception I have now taken on a new challenge as the Year 1 Leader. I have obtained my Masters in International Education facilitated by Nord Anglia University in conjunction with Kings College London.

My husband and I are very settled here in Bangkok (along  with our dog Roscoe!) and we both love the culture, climate and most importantly, the food! I am a keen cook and have learned to make many Thai dishes. I also enjoy travelling to nearby countries to sample their cuisine. I have recently taken up sewing, which is a lovely way to relax after work. Living in Thailand has allowed us to travel, meet wonderful people and we will definitely be staying a long time!

I think what makes St. Andrews a unique place to work is the attitude of the teaching staff. We all have a shared goal, which is to nurture each child as an individual and to teach them to be the best that they can be. We empower them to reach their full potential, be it in music, academia, sports or drama.  We try to develop the international mindedness of each child in a meaningful way and I love that as you walk around the school you hear many languages being spoken by staff and teachers. It has also been lovely to see students that I have previously taught, move up through the school.
