We love learning through stories in Nursery! This week, we have immersed ourselves in the ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ which has many wonderful cross-curricular links.
To develop our ‘Understanding of the World’, we have explored the metamorphosis of butterflies. The children have enjoyed acting out the different stages and creating beautiful illustrations using a variety of media. Their language skills have continued to develop as they have used story props to retell the story in their own words, creating lots of great sound effects as the caterpillar went “pop” from the egg and then munched on a variety of delicious foods.
We have also deepened our understanding of healthy and unhealthy choices; and the importance of having everything in moderation, as we looked at the foods the caterpillar eats and the different quantities. The children have practised their numeral to quantity matching skills through counting out the different foods to match each numeral, and have also explored sequencing through the days of the week elements within the story.
A ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ obstacle course was also a huge success! The children pretended to be caterpillars and wriggled through tunnels, cocooned in spinning wheels, and spread their wings and flew like beautiful butterflies, jumping off the soft apparatus to fly.
What a fantastic week of memories we have made! I look forward to more exciting adventures in Nursery next week.
