Focus is on the key subject areas and cross-curriculum priorities designed to support future learning, growth and active participation in an international learning community. Subject areas taught include Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Information Technology, PSHCE and weekly sessions of Physical Education and Music. A theme based approached to History, Geography, Art and Design is taught and encourages a creative thinking curriculum. As a leading school in an international community the curriculum takes into account our local and global culture and environment. Productions, residentials, excursions and theme days are a great asset and students find these a rewarding way to explore their world.
Students in Upper Key Stage 2 are encouraged to become aspiring leaders. They gain a sense of responsibility and purpose in their roles as senior students taking on roles such as house captains, student council representatives and global classroom leaders. Students are actively involved in real life scenarios, situations and projects that enable them to build on ideas that create change and make a difference in their local community. A Nord Anglia Education initiative, Challenge Based Learning, is one avenue we use for students to action change and become enterprising learners. Students are asked to develop a big idea linked to a global issue and to create guiding questions that direct their learning towards an outcome that is measureable and makes an impact to those around them. As our students mature socially and emotionally, we recognise their potential and provide a wealth of opportunities for collaborative working and risk-taking. We encourage an open-mind as we support them both academically and socially. We encourage our students to value and respect themselves and each other as well as showing consideration for the wider community.
Global learning and awareness is a strong focus in Upper Key Stage 2. Using key principles of our 'Be Ambitious' philosophy and modern technologies, teaching and learning consistently promotes creativity, inquiry, collaboration and communication. An environment is created where students are asked to extend and challenge their learning, to analyse and reflect on their achievements and to celebrate success and confidence. The Nord Anglia Education Global Classroom is a vital tool in which our students develop these skills and share their knowledge and abilities on a worldwide scale.
The high level of teaching and learning and pastoral guidance implemented in Upper Key Stage 2 fosters positive development in our students and encourages independent progressive learners. Our educators draw on different curriculum experiences, knowledge and expertise to ensure that our lessons are relevant and well matched to meet the needs of all our students.
To ensure a smooth transition into secondary life, strong links are made with our sister school in Shunyi. This ensures students are feeling positive and supported as they move forward in the next phase of their learning. Tours, parent information sessions and transition days provide an opportunity for students to experience lessons, familiarise themselves with timetables and facilities and to make connections with future learning.
In Upper Key Stage 2 we develop our students to become inspirational role models to others and possible leaders for the future. We ensure they are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve their goals and develop as confident global learners.
