Our impressive new facility at BSB Sanlitun for EYFS children really does provide an ideal environment to support their educational development and foster a genuine love of learning.
In 2016 our Early Years was graded outstanding in the Penta Inspection.
For several years, BSB Sanlitun explored the possibility of having a new building to house our Early Years facility. Our Head of Early Years set about looking at how she and her team would set about designing their ‘dream school’. In January 2018 their dream became a plan when we started the development of what is now the Li Building.
Children learning through play and having fun whilst being supported by adults was the focus.
While some classrooms in the old building had opportunities for free flow play, others did not. The Early Years team decided that this would be a key part in the new Early Years building.
“A good free play session offers a rich play and learning experience for children. It allows each child to progress at his/her own pace, it gives children practice in choosing, and in dealing with the consequences of choice, and it encourages a more flexible and open-ended use of the group’s resources.’’ Sue Grieshaber and Felicity McArdle 2010
Sliding doors between classrooms are an important feature that allow children, teachers and teaching assistants to also use the doors to mark make and write on.
The lay out of the classrooms and outdoor environment is important too. The Early Years team wanted to encourage independence for the children no matter how young. Therefore, the classrooms and outdoors are set-up to allow the children to reach the resources easily.
Display boards are at a low level, so that the children can see them.
Initially children learn about the world through their senses, the Early Years team decided that their ‘dream school’ would include a Sensory Room. The room is perfect for helping settle our younger children when they first arrive at school but is also an environment where the children can develop all their five senses.
We have a wonderful outdoor area one where children can take a risk safely, as well as a climbing frame, tunnels, trees, and slopes.
Our school has a Soft Play Area and learning spaces. These are areas where on polluted and bad weather days children have opportunities to continue to develop their learning but still have room to run around.
The Soft Play Area can accommodate big equipment that would not fit in classrooms. It also offers the possibility for the play to flow to the outside if the children so wish.
All our classrooms have role play areas to develop the children’s imagination and language. The classrooms have a home corner as standard, plus other role play areas depending on what the children want to do.
We also have a wonderful Library where a group story can take place and other areas for our children and their parents to read by themselves. The Library is an area with space to relax, where a child’s love of reading can be fostered. Books are displayed at low levels for the children to reach by themselves.
In January 2018, the dream became a plan, and in August 2018 the plan became a reality. Welcome to our wonderful Li Building. We are sure you will love it as much as we do.
