BISB Sponsors First Ever TEDxJamaicaPlain Event

September 21, 2015

What is something you've learned lately? This is the question that the British International School of Boston will pose to attendees of the first ever TEDxJamaicaPlain event on Saturday, October 3.

The question, part of an inspiration board at the event, hopes to inspire event attendees to think carefully about learning and how it truly is a lifelong endevour.

  • BISB will sponsor the first ever TEDxJamaicaPlain event
The TEDxJamaicaPlain event is the first of its kind in Jamaica Plain, and will feature dozens of local speakers exploring ideas all based around the theme of "Joy and Purpose."
Event organizer Charlotte Fixler said that she has always enjoyed TED Talks and other independently- organized TEDx events, and has left feeling inspired and energized.
When she moved to Jamaica Plain about one year ago, Fixler said, she knew she wanted to bring that same energy and inspiration to her new community.
"I knew right away that this community was special - filled with creative, passionate folks doing incredible work," she said. "I felt that bringing a TEDx event to JP would be the perfect way to get to know the community, and when I found out there had never been an event like this in the neighborhood, I applied for the license to host TEDxJamaicaPlain. Planning has been in the works since the spring, and I'm so fortunate to have an incredible team of volunteers working to make this event a reality - coaching speakers, engaging community volunteers, and planning every detail of this event to make it a memorable success!"
BISB signed up to sponsor the event this summer and is looking forward to being a part of this incredible new event in the community. High school students and some staff members will attend the event, getting inspiration from the speakers and their experiences, and bringing their learning back to our school community.
Fixler said she hopes the learning and inspiration kicked-off by the TEDx event will spread throughout the entire Jamaica Plain community, too.
"This event will showcase and celebrate ideas worth spreading from the Jamaica Plain community - featuring speakers and performers who live and work in JP, many of whom have worked passionate for decades in the community," she said. "TEDxJamaicaPlain will bring community members together for a day of connection and inspiration - presenting new ideas from the stage and giving folks a chance to interact with their neighbors, meet the speakers, and start new conversations around the ideas shared."
The event's theme is "Joy & Purpose," which Fixler said was intentionally broad in order to encourage a diverse range of speakers and topics at the event. As a result, the speakers lined up for the October 3 event will explore topics ranging from income inequality and cancer hypnotherapy to youth engagement and drum circles.
BISB will host an inspiration board at the event, asking attendees to think about and write down something they have learned recently. The inspiration board will challenge attendees to apply what they learn from the speakers to their own lives, and hopes to show that learning never stops. After the event, the event organizers will share many of the ideas created through the inspiration board with attendees.
Fixler said she believes the TEDx event will be an important one for the Jamaica Plain community, and that she is looking forward to seeing the good that comes out of this event.
"I hope this event is the start of many new connections and conversations that start within our community and spread to the global consciousness," she said. "We have incredible local talent here in our neighborhood, and I am very excited to give their ideas a chance to take center stage."
Can't attend the October 3 event? The speakers' presentations will be uploaded to the TEDx YouTube channel after the event and available to be viewed by the world! This is a great opportunity to be inspired by local residents and share new ideas.
